ive never needed a fan for my 40gb (not even for my older 20gb)...how come you need one?

do you have adequate ventilation?

The worst thing to do is put your PS3 in a confined space. If you must put it in there I would cut a whole on the right side so that the heat goes somewhere else. If you did that with a 60gb model it would sound like a jet plane.

If the wood around your PS3 is getting hot (like the plastic on a hair dryer) then I would definitely move it. Shunt your gear to the left slightly, put a glass table on the right side, sit PS3 on top and be done. Remember, even though your PS3 works, you might be shortening the lifespan of it by letting it get hot in there. Its not so much the fans but air circulation. It doesn't matter if the fans are blowing hard because its hot in there, your just blowing hot air into hot air.

I don't own a 40gb, I know they are cooler running but I don't know by how much. A 60gb would sweat it out in there and the fans would be in 4th gear.

Wouldn't this be the worst thing invented for the PS3?

The fans blow air right back in, trying to cool the inside, now where is that hot air going too? Straight to the bottom correct? And the vertical stand thing is blocking that hot air from escaping.

Alot of people misinterpret things when it comes to cooling.

Here's an example :
You have bedroom with your door and window, and it gets really hot in there with everything closed. You have a ceiling fan that is blowing the air downwards to you to cool you off, but yet, the heat is still there? Why? Because the hot air is still there circulating, if you open up your bedroom door and windows, the hot air has somewhere to leave.

Apply this to the PS3, The link you provided with your fan, is like a ceiling fan, and that vertical stand, is like having your door and windows closed, the hot air is still circulating inside. Remove the vertical stand and remove the ceiling fan and now the PS3 has it's 'doors and windows' open to remove the hot air.

All-in-all, the PS3 does not need a cooling system, but it does need ventilation/open 'holes'

Although my PS3 does not need cooling, I use this.

http://www.thermaltake.com/product/C...01/r15on01.asp

I originally got it for my sister as a laptop cooler, but she never used it, so I placed it under the PS3. You can tell it's working because it changes from a solid state to a liquid state due to heat.
