most definitely get the cd player. never ever will an ipod sound better than a cd player which is playing the original source unfiltered so to speak. and no cd's are not like dvd's or even vhs. if you want vhs buy an ipod. i'm listening to edie brickell and new bohemians' ultimate collection on cd on my 7.1 surround system and it sounds so rich and full of detail. i've got an ipod dock and i'm more than certain the ipod would sound crappy. do yourself a favor and go with a cd player. don't downgrade.

do you mean portable or at home? for portable i would have to say an mp3 player but I use both, I love using cd's, I can tell a difference in sound quality and there are times when i don't want to bother ripping a new cd into itunes or WMP however if I am traveling away from home or going for a run i use the mp3 player, it stores all my music in a tiny package and would be far less expensive to lose that my whole cd collection which i can't carry anyway. so I use both for portable but at home the mp3 gets put away and it's cd/sacd/vinyl only

Have you considered a squeezebox? Better fidelity than an ipod and more convenient than a CDP. The stock squeezebox doesn't sound half bad (rip flac or wav though using Exact Audio Copy program).
You can eventually throw in an outboard DAC to improve the fidelity. Or if you have a spare laptop, go laptop to USB outboard DAC. |

just a question: cd from my understanding is not exactly the end all be all of music quality and doesnt ipod have options available to playback your music at cd or higher quality depending on the source of the file and the type? i know mp3 aac etc suck but are there not lossless types of compression you could use to get the same quality playback as a cd? as far as i know cd is not recorded in 7.1 etc..... so how exactly short of getting a "highend" cd player lol is it better?

If you're ripping music from a cd onto a pc and then loading it onto an ipod, then i would think you're better off going with a cd player, and cut out the extra steps. if you're buying your music online then it's a different story. why not just use a blu-ray player to play your cds?

You can rip MP3s from CDs using Apple lossless and it doesn't sound bad at all. Once you get a taste of good vinyl and high res digital like SACDs, regular 16/44 CDs are nothing special. Certainly not worth hassling the guy just for observing that MP3s are taking over the industry, which is in fact true. That's what put Tower out of business.
