They sound the same to me. I'd go with the IPOD though. Hands down. Buying a CD player right now is like buying a DVD player for your home theater. Maybe even like buying a VHS player.

most definitely get the cd player. never ever will an ipod sound better than a cd player which is playing the original source unfiltered so to speak. and no cd's are not like dvd's or even vhs. if you want vhs buy an ipod. i'm listening to edie brickell and new bohemians' ultimate collection on cd on my 7.1 surround system and it sounds so rich and full of detail. i've got an ipod dock and i'm more than certain the ipod would sound crappy. do yourself a favor and go with a cd player. don't downgrade.

Sorry to tell you but the IPOD's kinda taking over the industry. Actually I should say that MP3's are taking over the industry. But I don't listen to music much so........

Is this a serious question? For audio fidelity a cd player will beat an iPod every single time in a beatdown. The only reason to own an iPod is convenience and portability.

If you don't listen to music much, perhaps you should let those of us who do field the question.

In terms of sound quality for home use, definitely invest in a CD player. I don't know what your budget or desired use will be, but I would suggest checking out players made by Oppo. Oppo is well regarded for making inexpensive players that outperform or equal players costing much several hundred dollars more. Plus, Oppo players are universal, meaning they'll play CDs, DVDs, and Super Audio CDs, which are high definition audio discs. Check out the Oppo DV-980H reviews located here:

http://www.oppodigital.com/dv980h/

It's a steal at only $169.

do you mean portable or at home? for portable i would have to say an mp3 player but I use both, I love using cd's, I can tell a difference in sound quality and there are times when i don't want to bother ripping a new cd into itunes or WMP however if I am traveling away from home or going for a run i use the mp3 player, it stores all my music in a tiny package and would be far less expensive to lose that my whole cd collection which i can't carry anyway. so I use both for portable but at home the mp3 gets put away and it's cd/sacd/vinyl only
