It is a distributed computing program ran in conjunction with stanford university. It runs simulations of protein folding and how they may be involved in various diseases i.e. alzheimers, parkinsons, etc. You personally will not get anything out of it besides the fact that you are lending computing power to help find cures for horrible diseases.

PS- you can read all of this on your PS3 as well.

Folding@home is a "distributed computing" project whereby unused computer cycles are used to simulate the "folding" of proteins. When proteins misfold you get diseases such as diabetes, cycstic fibrosis & cancer, so the project aims to improve understanding of why this happens in the hope of finding cures.

You'll get the satisfaction of knowing you are contributing to medical research as well as the ability to join a team and compete with everyone else.
