I'm about to be in the market for a new receiver and some speakers. I figured it'd be a nice boost to the theater before I start getting blu-ray films. I've been looking around, and even got a demo of one system that would ultimately run about 3 grand for the receiver and speakers. If I were to go with this one I'd probly get it in pieces, starting with the receiver and fronts, then slowly adding the rest over the course of the year.
That being said, I been wondering if I'm better off waiting for receivers capable of lossless audio codecs through HDMI to come out. I'm also curious about how much I should be spending on speakers; when does the point of diminishing returns happen?

You should wait to buy a new receiver. I dont know of any that have the HDMI 1.3 spec. As for speakers the best time to get them is at the end of the year when they are trying to get rid of that years models. The thing is that speaker technology basically has not changed in a long time so the only different about the new speakers is the way they look and maybe a few minor modifications and a super high price.

I agree on waiting for an HDMI 1.3 receiver, some should be coming out possibly as soon as next month.

For speakers I am a big fan of Klipsch (check my sig) but can recommend other brands depending on what you are looking for. One thing I like about klipsch is that no matter what area of the market (price point) you are at, they have something that is ultra-competative in that area. Want a tiny computer system? They have it. Want high end 2channel at $8,000 ? Got that too.

Diminishing returns: to be honest, you can have an amazing system for not too much $$ these days.

I would consider this entry level:

And anything more than this I feel you start hitting diminishing returns, although those small steps are obviously worth it for many, many people:

The prices on those pages are MSRP, which you should be able to beat at retail.

A Sherwood Newcastle and some Dennon have so far been announced. I don't have specific model #s yet.

You have to listen to speakers to decide. Klipsch are nice, but too brght for me with not enough midrange detail. I prefer Boston Acoustics which have a similar brght sound without the muddling effect of a horn tweeter. Ideally Vienna Acoustic or Martin Logans are fantastic. Definitive Technology are probably the best value for home theater.

When audio is concerned pick a price point going in. I can show you speakers that will alway sound better and cost more. You have to decide how much you want to spend, not just now but in total.

You can do a very nice surround system with a good Denon receiver and some Definitive Technology speakers for $2k. For the most part $1k will be the start of a 'nice' surround system with the sky the limit. Music will need better equipment than movies for quality.

This is my advice: 1.Pick an amount you want to spend. 2. Now decide is that the total amount you want to spend on the system, or is that step one for you? (i.e. the receiver and fronts like you said) 3.Go to a local quality stereo shop, or somewhere you can hear many really good brands, and get a knowledgable salesperson who can guide you through the process. 4. Decide what about each brand you do or do not like, i.e. too bright, not enough bass detail, not crisp enough, etc. etc.

This is kind of like test driving an Aston then finding the car that most simulates the Aston that you can afford. I find it very important to know what is out there. You might find that by strecthing your budget just 5 or 600 you can get something that you really love, or you might be able to save a few hundred and still get it.

and all brands will be releasing 1.3 receivers. Just a matter of time. The question is do you want a lower quality 1.3 or a higher quality 1.2? I am a firm believer that you will be happier with a really good DTS receiver rather than a lower quality amp and processor using DTSHD.

I hear DENON are some of the best A/V recievers on the market.

Nobody:

Denon are prob the best dollar for dollar. High quality processors, high quality amps (read high current), very low distortion.

I would take any Denon 1907 or better with DTS over any Sony amp with DTSHD.

ok, I will wait a little longer before I fully renovate the stereo. Much of this move will depend on what I get for funds in the near future.

I did listen to some demos at the Magnolia section in Best Buy the other day. I think I will change my plan to get a nice Denon receiver and some nice speakers sometime around the summer or fall. I might go ahead and get the movies now while saving some bucks for the stereo and getting it when the time is right.

nice.Hopefully your Sales Pro knew what they were talking bout! lol. Try out the Definitive BP7002 fronts, a Mythos Three Center, and a pair of pro monitor 1000 or Mythos Gems in the rear (or a smaller set of BP7006 floorstandings if you can!) Just make sure you use a splitter for your LFE out for so each front gets it. No sub needed either. You already have two in the fornts!
