Default External Hard Drive?

Can somone help me with purchasing an external hard drive for the ps3? I plan on using it for music and videos. I think the hard drive needs to be formatted to Fat 32, is that correct? If so how do I do that and can I still use the Hard drive with my PC once its formatted? Is thier a limit in hard drive storage that can be formatted?

Im thinking abouute getting this one.. What do you tink?

I just purchased my External HDD for my PS3. I bought the 1TB. Yes, it does need to be formatted to Fat 32. Therefore, you can not have any files larger than 4GB. If you have videos larger, you will have to split them.

My HDD does work with my computer, I am unsure as to how you are planning to use it.

I mainly purchased the HDD for my HiDef video camera. I do not have a top quality computer to watch the HD video and therefore I am storing all videos on the HDD and watching via PS3.

I am very pleased with it and now I no longer have to limit my filming.

I bought one a few weeks ago for my music, and I've been very pleased with it. The only hard part will be finding something to format it with. Windows won't format it itself, I got something called Swiss Knife I think it was. I will try to find out what it is when I get home.

The only thing I would recommend, make sure you have a good filing system if you are planning on putting a lot of things on it. I've got a good bit of music on it, and it's broken down per artist that so it doesn't index the entire file system all at once, just the directory of folders, then the individual artists.

You should be reasonably happy with almost any, I would only avoid Maxtor drives as they have a reputation, though I've never had a problem with the ones I have used.

Just keep it cool and well vented.

would anyone on the board suggest getting an external drive as opposed to changing the internal HDD?? I only have 20GB PS3 and it quickly filled with the new trend of downloading 2GB of the game onto the HDD.

I suggest upgrading the internal HDD. My main reasons are that by doing so you have less clutter near your PS3, no usb cords, powercords, etc. I have a WD 320gb and its worked flawlessly since the day i got it in mid december '07.

I agree, plus game installs, patches, addons, PSN games and demos have to go on the internal hard drive.

Oh yeah i didnt even think of that. Good show. Thats probably a better reason then the ones i listed since so many games now have large installs and companies like to hold out on some of the content for a later purchase.

I used SwissKnife to format mine too. It's easy to use and works.
Heh, beat me to finding the link.

To answer the question of upgrading internal/having an external, I upgraded both my internal to a 120 gig, and bought an external. I wanted to keep my game saves/downloads on my internal without having to worry about space, and wanted my external as a backup device and to keep my music on without cluttering up my internal drive.
