I really don't like the way Sony is going with this. Now they are leaving PS2 backwards compatability on all models. And the flash card support and less USB ports. Well, lucky I got a 60GB ages ago. But then they can always get the compatability back as we've been all talking about.

Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong, but are the really taking the other 80GB PS3 off the market?

It's already been said all they doing is swapping in 80G into the 40G. So the console is the same.

People are confuse.

The new 80GB will become the norm, and will replace the 40GB.

In store there will be no other model but this new 80GB.
Only problem, this new 80GB is just the 40GB with HDD switch.

So no, it will not play PS2 games. What you get in the 40GB is what you'll get in the new 80GB.

It will not play ps2 games.

"The 80GB model will retail for $399, and will offer all of the features and functionality of the 40GB model with double the storage to accommodate more movies, graphics, music, photos and other entertainment content -- all for the same price."

The 80GB is the new 40GB. Same features but bigger HDD. I think it's great. They're trying to slowly fade away the PS2.

Hardly. I was at Best Buy a few days ago and they had a stack of them about 5x5x5. Every electronics store has an asston of them.

I am pretty sure there will be 2 80GB skus;

80GB (replacing 40GB with Sixaxis) - $399
80GB bundle (with game or Blu-ray and DS3) - $499

its good that they're trying to keep the standard at 80GB and not having different sizes. People can upgrade the hard drives themselves so i don't think the standard sizes matter.

Are we the only people who think this is a great move? I'd rather take a $100 price cut than have BC. Cut a few more features (gb) and bring the price down to $250-$300

The manufacturing cost is $400, I doubt you'll see a price cut anytime soon. Hard disk size doesn't affect the manufacturing costs.

what you all are forgetting is that the 2.36 firmware update has made even the regualr 40g systems backwards compatable, so every system will be able to play ps2 games. They duped everyone in the beginning by making us pay more for a system that just needed a firmware patch. I still love my ps3 though
