Why would they put out a 40GB version? that would be going backwards. They already pulled the better 20GB version since they lost more money on the 20GB than the 60GB version. The 60GB version only had a few dollars of extra parts in it but they charged $100 more.

Not gonna happen. Sony has already made it apparent that, other then "transition" times, they play to sell only one model of PS3 at a time. This started when they ceased the 20 GB model (along with the two price point strategy which they found was not working well) and produced only the 60GB. Now they've stopped producing the 60 GB and started production of the 80GB model. I expect that when they want to go beyond the 80GB model, it will be superceded by something like a 100GB or 120GB model.

But never a lower GB capacity. Could you imagine how gleeful the HD-DVD fan boys' reactions to that would be. So definitely never happen.

What would a lower capacity hard drive have to do with HD DVD? You use the hard drive for Downloads. It has nothing to to with BD or HD DVD. For that 20GB is way more than enough. If Sony ever starts having movies to download then maybe we can actually start using the hard drive for something other than Demos and trailers. I'm mainly using my PS3 for BD playback and a larger hardrive offers no advantage for movie watching.

As whippersnapper said, Sony has already laid out their plan. They are going to discontinue the 60GB version currently selling for $499 and only sell the 80GB version. Most analysts expect they will drop the price of that to $499 when supplies of the 60GB are gone.

There is also a rumored 120GB model for Europe at $599. So we may end up with 3 versions - 40GB ($399), 80GB ($499) and 120GB. Choices are good.

I really doubt if they will. During E3 Jack Tretton said they were going with what the consumer wanted, which I'm assuming would be a larger HDD. That's why they're phasing out the 60 gig right now, just like the 20 gig. If anything by next year they could possibly release a 120 gig model.

Gleeful of what? More PS3s being sold because of a lower price? At least it's just different capacities, unlike the differences between the xbox core & premium.

Well choices may be good, but delusions and unfounded rumors certainly aren't.
