Default Definitive Technology?

I have an old Sony HTIB that I would like to upgrade. Because of my budget I'll have to do it piece by piece.

I would eventually like to upgrade the Sony reciever to an Onkyo 606, however from reading these forums it seems like the smartest thing is to upgrade the speakers first.

I was going to start out by buying the center and two fronts. For the two fronts I'm looking at the definitive tech promonitor 1000 bookshelf speakers, and for the center I am looking at the definitive tech procenter 1000. Those three speakers are $219 ea. Are these speakers good for the money? Reliable?

In a few months when my budget allows I would like to move those promonitor 1000 bookshelfs to the rear and get two floorstanding tower speakers for the front. And after that I would buy the new reciever and sub.

I am usually hesitant about buying this kind of equipment at best buy (these are in the magnolia section), however i've been reading some pretty good reviews on these speakers and other places on the net seem to have the speakers for the same price. Any thoughts? should I be safe going with these?

If you enjoy the sound they produce, then get them.

As far as deftech as a company, they seem to make good stuff. I've auditioned their Mythos line, and was impressed. I also own a supercube I and thoroughly enjoy it. So from a quality standpoint, I think you would be happy. As far as how those speakers actually sound, I'm not sure as I haven't listened, and even if I had, I'd still say listen for yourself and compare to other similar priced speakers at Magnolia or BB if that's the price range you want to stay in. I'd also recommend searching for local high end retailers and give everything a listen. It's fun, and you can hear what you get at each price point.

welcome to the forum broken81,

i see you've been researching a little bit, and thats a great place to start off with. Research to death on certain speakers, and see how it goes for you.

Then audition them. sure you can head over to magnolia, but have you tried looking into the other stores? great thing about some ht stores out there, is that they have dedicated rooms for speaker auditioning, and also gives you the chance to do it 'properly' (the best is to take em home and see if it works well with your current room dimensions, but we can talk about that later on) . Also prepare yourself with some demo material you are very familiar with. It always helps to listen first in stereo then go 5.1 - trust me.

Definitive has always been a great speaker company, and i think that you'd be happy with em. Problem is, there are also other speaker companies you'd may wanna give a try as well.

Im sure a couple of hornheads would refer you to klipsch.

id heavily refer you to spending as much as possible to get the soundstage first, then focus on your rear speakers.

heres some more research material

soundandvision guide

advanced techniques... a bit too technical, but worth the look...

Thanks for all the helpful info!

I went to the store and listened to the speakers, I wound up just buying the procenter 1000 center speaker. I think I'm going to save up a little more money and get two good tower speakers to go along with it, i'm thinking something in the $600 - $700ea. range.

I hooked up the new center channel and 2 old bookselfs speakers I had laying around to replace the small speakers that came with it. Wow, it's an amazing difference already! Spoken dialog sounds great, it was exactly what I was looking for.

I can't wait to keep adding to it. ...resisting urge to use credit card

I own the older versions of the 1000's (5.1 system) and love them. You can't go wrong with these speakers. I chose them over a Klipsch system and don't regret my choice. I plan on picking up 2 more to get 7.1.

I have a def tech set and i think they sound great.
I got a pro center 1000, 4 pro 800's, and a pro sub 1000 for a 5.1 set up, but as the number 1 rule when shopping for speakers.......go listen to different kind's and juge for yourself.

I have the 1000s as my mains and procenter 1000 as well as 4 800s for surrounds. My advice is that if your gonna upgrade to larger towers make sure that your center channel isn't drowned out by the towers. Even with the 1000s I sometimes have the urge to upgrade to the procenter 2000s which timbre match the 1000s. The speaker size on the procenter 1000 is 4.5 i believe and the 2000 is 5.25 which is the same as the promonitor/cinema 1000s.

All you have to do is is read my sig. First I decided I wanted bipoles instead of direct firing. Then I went and demo'd just about every bipole speaker I could find, and then demo'd every speaker Def. Tech made at the time. I've had my fronts for about 7-8 years along with the sub and the sides and never had a days problem. {knock wood}. I upgraded the center and the rears a few years ago and I think i'm about done. I dont know much about their newer stuff but I can tell ya that I know quite a few guys that have bought Def Techs after hearing my system. Cant go wrong imo. Good luck!

I've got DefTech, my dad's got DefTech, my buddy has DefTech... we all love them to death. None of us can even spend the money to go to a theater anymore because the sound just doesn't compare. You should demo for yourself, but you will enjoy them. Good Luck.

well here a quick question since there seems to be so many def tech owners. I currently have the 800s for surrounds and rears and was thinking of getting the bpx bipole speakers. Do you think it would be worth it?
