Exclamation Marvel to spend $600 million on its next 4 movies!

Source

The article is a lot about Politics in California (which is not to be talked about on the boards). But the interesting part of the article is that Marvel has basically put out there what their total budget it for Thor, Captain America, Iron Man 2 and The Avengers: A whopping $600 million for 4 films!
I know Iron Man is slated for a $140 million budget. If the three solo movies cost the same that leaves $180 for The Avengers! (probably will go to salaries)

Here's the excerpt or click on the link above for the entire article.

I've learned that Marvel Studios intends to keep $600 million in productions in the Los Angeles area if the state makes it worth their while -- Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and Avengers which takes the slate through 2011. "They're willing to make a commitment to keep all four productions here in town. They're looking for existing studio space right now," Favreau told me.

Wow! But will they profit from their movies? I wouldn't mind watching Thor and Captain America though.

I just don't see a point in creating an expensive movie and not profit from it. There's no doubt in my mind most movies come up short of their budget and lose money.

I think you have it backwards. I think most movies make money. They do spend a lot on the big ones but they also make a lot. You also have to take DVD sales and TV sindication. They are obviously making money on most movies or they wouldnt keep doing it.

There's a lot of "Hollywood Accounting" talk that goes on, but when it comes down to it, people get paid, people get jobs (and I'm not talking about the main cast). It's a good thing.

Unless your making Meet Dave. Then it's a write off.

Well, both Iron man and Incredible Hulk have both made nearly $500 million domestically and nearly $800 million worldwide. As others has indicated, the DVD/Blu ray, cable and tv broadcast will probably net over them well over $1 billion.

People will pay their hard earned money as long as there is something out there interesting enough to entertain them. Also more A-list actors appear to be interested in being in these kind of movies.

According to ComingSoon.net Paramount has Thor as well to be directed by Matthew Vaughn:

Although, IMDB doesn't show who's distributing it though:

Some Marvel movie news from the Hollywood Reporter bears the interesting revelation that director Matthew Vaughn is no longer attached to the 'Thor' film.

'Thor' will be released about six weeks after 'Iron Man 2,' and Marvel is waiting for a script polish from scribe Mark Protosevich ('I Am Legend'). Matthew Vaughn no longer is attached to direct the project because his holding deal expired December.

"It's very much a Marvel superhero story but against the backdrop of nothing you've seen before," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in describing 'Thor' as a period fantasy in the vein of 'The Lord of the Rings.'

Default Update on The Avengers and Iron Man 2

Louis Leterrier has revealed not only that Jon Favreau is currently writing Iron Man 2 with Robert Downey Jr., but that the sequel to the Spring blockbuster will feature a new character from the Avengers, after the brief appearance by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in the post-credits sequence of Iron Man.

Additionally Leterrier is reported to have said that 2011 will definitely bring Jackson, Downey Jr., Hulk actor Ed Norton and two other 'A-list actors' - presumably whichever A-listers get cast as Thor and Captain America in their respective upcoming movies that Marvel is also producing - together for the Avengers movie.

It was already rumored that Thor would appear in Iron Man 2. But I guesshe could be referring to Antman. Nice to get confirmation that they have Downey Jr, Jackson and Norton sured up for The Avengers already.

Iron Man itself made back it's budget plus just with the theatrical run, when you factor in DVD sales and rentals {which cost rental companies MORE than what you would pay to buy it to get the rental rights} and as others have mentioned there are a few other ways to wring that blood from the stone they'll have more than enough kicking around for the $600 million.

Plus, Captain America will make money, and the Avengers will make more.

Not sure where you're getting your numbers from

Iron Man: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/business
Incredible Hulk: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800080/business

That's a shade less than the $500 million each that you're claiming...

He's saying both together (referring to Marvel movies this Summer). $446 million together domestically and $793 million World wide thus far (together).

As far as this guy, Mark Protosevich ('I Am Legend')writing Iron man 2 goes, doesn't give me much hope. I thought I am legend was terrible overall. The writing was especially bad. The guy took a perfect story and destroyed it. Hopefully they will get someone better that can write a proper followup to Iron Man.
