Has this happened to anyone? When I load a BD.... the ps3 tries to recognize it but fails every time. At first it wouldn't play some BD's but now it won't play any BD's AT ALL. It WILL quickly load and recognize dvd's though. I thought it may be a dirty lens but it loads dvd's so quickly. Does the ps3 use the same optics for both formats? I tried a complete restore and it didn't help. Anyone heard of this problem? Any help or info would be appreciated! It is out of warranty and I have a brand new unopened Sony S300 ready to take the ps3's spot but I am thinking of returning it due to the lack of the s300's HD audio output.

this just happend to a friend of mine who happens to be a 360 fanboy and he bought one b/c of the bd playback and i told him games were awesome on the ps3......yea i didnt hear the end of it "my 360 never died on me.....what a crap system".....the irony is that everyone elses 360 has died on them and their ps3 are working hard and good. anyway i think this is a firmware update flaw that causes the ps3 to do this, right now there are about 10-20 ps3's on ebay listed as broken and they all say "will not read bd's but will read dvd's". i wish i could explain why this is happening but i dont know. all i know is that sony said they would fix his free b/c he's only had it for 7 months (still under the 1yr factory warr.). the best i can figure is that the new firmware screwed up the bluray drivers.

![]() Thanks Andy. It did happen shortly after I updated the firmware. Does anyone know if sony will help me......even though I took the cover off and voided the warranty(like a dumb ass!). I thought I might be able to clean it or something. ![]() ![]() Also, I figured the restore would roll back the firmware.....but it didn't. That's strange!!! Maybe Sony can walk me through it on the phone to fix it. Then they wouldn't know cover was removed. What do ya's think? Last edited by HRC; 05-25-2008 at 02:08 AM. |

Because the firmware resides on the chips and not on the HDD. That is why each firmware is only 100Mb or thereabouts.
So there is no rolling back firmware. Why would you want to do that anyway? fuad |

This happened with my original 20gb about a year ago. Seems to be happening more and more lately, from the posts i see on here and other forums. Probably Sony using cheaper BD diodes or something.

My friends BD drive in his PS3 wasn't playing Blu-Ray movies but was playing the PS3 games which are on BD discs. He told me it happened after the 2.30 firmware update. I went over to his house about 2 weeks ago and I asked him to show me what was happening. All the BD did was after clicking the BD disc on the XMB the PS3 went to a black screen. I changed his settings for turning off the internet access to BD discs from the XMB menu and I tweaked out a setting about "white levels" I think thats what it was called in the video output menu. After that I tried to watch AVP on his PS3 and it worked fine. He told me tried watching the same movie before and it wasn't working at all. He was happy that his PS3 wasn't broken and had to pay Sony to fix it since he has a 60GB PS3 from launch.

My relese day 60 gig PS3 would not play any blu discs (game or movie) after I downloaded either GTA 4 update or the 2.35 firmware update. I called sony to see what I could do and they told me they would send me a box so I could ship it to them. they told me I would recieve a refubished PS3 for $149.00.
It sucks but Im glad Im not forced to pay 3 times $149.00 for a new system. |
