Hello,
I recently purchased a Sony Bravia 40" HDTV (KDL-40S4100) and I have it hooked up to my PS3 via HDMI cable. I know for a fact the TV resolution for Blu-rays is 1080p/24 (this is displayed on the screen display when the movie starts) however some of the scenes in every movie i have watched so far show up grainy or with static. I notice it most in low lighting scenes and since most other scenes show up superbly I was willing to let it slide until I watched cloverfield today. On of the early scenes was terribly grainy and staticy. Is this a TV problem or maybe a player problem? I know the player has been updated with all available firmware updates, what else can I do to fix this issue? thanks for your help |

What other movies did you notice this in? I'm assuming it's the same place in the movie each time?
I'm willing to bet what you're seeing is the director's intent, although many will tell you to calibrate your t.v. professionally, or at least with a DVE disk. |

well, I have noticed it in a number of movies (Cloverfield, master and commander, and Reign over Me were the most recent) but not at any specific time. More than not it is when ever the lighting is low. I never noticed it on my previous HD tv though it was a much older unit that only had resolutions of 480p and 1080i and since most of the blu rays are 1080p i assumed that i was just seeing the blu rays in standard or progressive scan.
how do you calibrate a TV? and what is a DVE disk? thanks |

You need to pick up Ratatouille or use the DVE disk and calibrate your TV. Out of the box the TV is set to "Vivid", it looks god awful. This has worked very well for me, it is a place to start anyway.

Thanks Jason, just adjusting the sharpness helped a great deal. I dont seem to have an advanced settings menu, however, unless there is a special way to access it.
thanks again ![]() Brian |
