Question Motion and Depth on Samsung TV ???

I have a Samsung LN52A650 and PS3 8OGB along with Yamaha Receiver V1800. The other day, i went to Fry's and i noticed on the display they were playing Live Free or Die Hard. It was a Sony XBR LCD and the player was PS3. I thought the image was different than mine. It was more like 3D image , sort of realism picture... So my question to you guys is why am i not getting the same image? Is the calibration has to do with it or the LCD Video chip?

Also, i am thinking about getting the Panasonic BD35K for my room. Will i notice the difference between PS3 VS Panasonic BD35K image?

Your feedback will greatly appreciate very much.

Thanks.

The tv was probably set to 120hz. It gives you almost a fake look.

You mean Motion Flow was on. 120 Hz and motion flow are different.

I think its the XBR. I have it and Ive seen notable differences [image wise] between my Samsung TV and the Sony when I'm playing flicks like LFDH or POTC. Much more life like but then it could be the particular option [I forget what its called] under the PICTURE menu that lets you make it "more" 3D if you will. Just my opinion, maybe someone more knowledgeable could shed further light into the subject.

Hi, pdmax, yes that is one of the benefits I have tried to tell others about in the past (but was always laughed at) that the Sony Blu-ray player playing over a Sony XBR HDTV has more of a three-dimensional pop. I have an XBR4 and a Sony S300 and a Sony S550, and there is just something - especially in the S300 - that works better imagewise than another company's Blu player. I've tried things like the Panny 30 but it doesn't get that extra pop the way the Sony S300 does.

The setting of the XBR must also be set to "Vivid" in order to really get it and the Motion Enhancer set to "High". I've watched films like "The Searchers" on Blu in this way and it really feels like I am right there watching it being filmed. Some here detest this because it is more of a video feel than film, but I love it.

So you won't get that 3D like feel even if you get a Sony XBR4 unless you also have a Sony Blu-ray player. As I said, I have tested the same films with the Panny 30 over the XBR4 and they don't have whatever is in the Sony.

You have me curious because I have a Panny BD30 and always wondered about the Sony BD players.

Bleh... torch mode. Thats such an unnatural and unintended look. I'd rather watch nothing at all than to see my movies butchered like that.

I agree. I swear I'm starting to see one of these threads everyday. You can't turn off 120hz mode... You can only turn on/off the motion enhancer mode (or whatever it may be called on your particular setup). That's what makes your image look like a soap opera.

I love the look. Just watched "The Dark Knight" and "Prince Caspian". In my own opinion I think it looks much better than what I see in a movie theatre. I have PS3 hooked up to my Sony KDL-46Z4100/B. Makes me want to see all of my movies all over again in Blu-Ray.

I think I know what you guys are talking about. I was at Circuit City one time watching their Blu-ray display with Surf's Up playing.....something about it man, it was like watching one of them 3-D movies with the glasses. There was this wave that felt like it popped right out of the screen.....

Very impressive. And yet I found it oddly disturbing

I want the best picture quality, same as anyone. But I think there's a line between lifelike and ........too lifelike.

That's because you should be using the same T.V. and player from the same manufacturer....They are designed that way.

Yes, the folks that want to watch film in the same manner in which it was intended to be watched detest the interpolated/processed/fake picture that all of the LCD motionator crap does to a picture. We also get a little miffed when folks start promoting the God-awful Vivid or Dynamic picture modes.

Personally, I'm getting real tired of folks (not directed at the quote above) who don't understand what they are talking about make comments like "it's the 120Hz" or "you have to tun on 120Hz to get that picture". When are people going to understand that 120Hz is the refresh rate of the set? It cannot be turned on/off. The only thing you can turn on/off is the motion interpolation crap.. It's not that hard to understand, folks.

Lastly, the statements about how you must have matching equipment to get a certain type of picture is just plain FUD. Sorry, show me the professional reviews that state this. A certain player does not work "better" with a certain TV. A Sony BD player is not going to give you more "pop" (or whatever you want to call it) with a Sony TV versus a Pany player or a Pany TV. Picture quality from all of the current line of BD players is top-notch and comparable across the boards. It's the differences in the various TVs and all of the processing that's going on that causes a difference in picture quality. There is NO reason you must use the same manufacturer's equipment in order to get the "best" picture. There is absolutely NO evidence to support this. The only advantage would be the ability to control the equipment from the same brand remote, but most universal remotes can be programmed to do exactly that.
