Arrow How big is too big for HDTV?

Hear me out first before you say, "It can never be too big." like some sort of Madonna wanna-be.

I bought a Samsung 42" for my parents and I tweaked the power settings to save on electricity and wear on the HDTV. But it still consumes more power than the old 27" set, I believe.

Some of you must have HDTV's in excess of 50 to 60 inches. While that is a great size for home theater and watching movies, do you really want to burn 400 to 500 watts of power just to watch the evening news?

I'm just saying. Between the cost of the set, cable/dish, blu-ray players and movies, "free tv" has become a very expensive hobby!

an ISF calibration saves a lot of power. Also, the amount of power that it draws is the price of doing business.

This is the best answer! In all seriousness, i do not see a need for anything really above a 65 inch. The only question should be how much you are willing to spend

Conserver power in other areas of your house. Thermostat, energy effiecient appliances etc.

And the size of the TV depends on the size of the room it is in. 72inch tv in a 10x10 room is not a good idea (friend of mine did this). My 50inch is in my basement that is pretty big. If I buy another TV I might go a little bigger but not much.

Do front projectors still use incandescent bulbs? Wouldn't a fluorescent be more cost effective?

it all has to do with viewing distances and size of the room.
theoretically no tv is too big for the right situation.

The problem is those bulbs are designed to have a certain color purity to them. Just changing the bulb to a non-standard (if it were possible) would change the color of the movie. Not all bulbs are alike.

Couldn't other alterations occur to make the right colors?

I suppose if it is within tolerance then you could tweak the color saturation levels and such. I am not talking about two bulbs of varying white. But the possibility of white bulb vs a yellowish one.

if you are concerned with the small increase in electricity consumption from your new tv purchase, i think you have bigger problems.

??

How much more exactly it is to watch news at 52" over a 42" per month? If you're talking about extra $10 or $15 / month, then should we even be talking about it when you spend $2-4K on a tv set?

Large TV and nice HT or Blus are all luxury goods. If you are thinking that you cannot afford or should not have a bigger tv because electricity is too expensive, you should probably be thinking if you should have a HT at all..

I guess I was referring to manufacturer's capabilities.

Not the case with me. I suppose part of the question could be WHY have a set which so large? There comes a point of little return.
