Default 3d effect on LG

I am in the market for a new tv and was set on the xbr4 until I recieved a call from my brother yesterday. He said he was staying over someone's house and they had just purchased a new high end 1080p LG and mentioned that the image looked different then anything he had ever seen. He was talking about an effect it had that made it seem like you could tell how far back something was in the image. He said it was not 3d in the traditional sense but it seemed like some images were closer or further out and not just flat on the screen. Personally I think he is losing his mind. I have been surfing LG's site and haven't seen anything that resembles that. I was thinking it might be a plasma and he just isn't used to such a high contrast ratio? Can anyone make heads or tails of this?

The new LG Scarlet LCD models that have 120Hz video processing. That's it.

XBR4 has it as well.

The XBR4 Most Definitely does have it as well... It is when the Motion Enhancer setting is set to HIGH. I personally love this setting on the tv, the 3-dimensional effect is awesome IMO, especially noticeable when watching Blu-Ray.

I dont understand why a percentage of people on this site do not like it???

I think a lot of people don't like it because it has an 'artificial' look to it. I was watching Hairspray on Blu with a friend of mine the other day and he said, "It looks like you're actually on the set watching it be filmed." So to some, it looks as if it's a movie set and not necessarily like a realistic film. To those who love it, they say that it feels like you're actually right there in the movie with the characters.

Me personally? I love the 120hz technology, especially when watching stuff like Spiderman 3. It looks amazing to me and I can't imagine ever buying another TV without 120. I like the motion enhancer on when watching action Blus, but for most HD television channels, I keep it on off, especially 'cause of a lot of the compression that can go on w/ some HD channels. It just depends on what kind of movie I'm watching if I want it on or off.

Me, I prefer my movies to look the way they were intended to. I do see the appeal of the technology though.

Default 120hz or 480hz

i have seen a few tv's that have 480hz refresh rates, so would this be similar to 120hz technology because that would be like 8:8 Ration, also i say a plasma that had this feature as well.

Apparently this does!

Motion so smooth it looks realer than real life.

Although that is a mistake. I remember reading elsewhere how at some consumer electronics show in Japan, it was already displayed - but it was still a test technology...

The image refresh isn't actually that high... thats the Sub-field drive

"Panasonic VIERA plasma TVs use self-illuminating pixels and 480 Hz Sub-field Drive which react very quickly to changes on screen. This translates to a remarkably high-moving picture resolution of over 900 lines*1. That means no more frustrating afterimages in fast-action scenes. Now you can enjoy smooth, clear motion in sports and fast action movies."

"A standard video signal is actually a series of still images, flashed on screen so quickly that we believe we are watching a moving image. The typical frame rate used in North America is 60 frames per second (60Hz) meaning that a TV would display 60 individual still images every second. Sub-field drive is the method used to flash the individual image elements (dots) on a plasma panel. For each frame displayed on the TV the Sub-field drive flashes the dots 8 times or more, meaning that the dots are flashing 480 times per second (480Hz) or more. (Example: 60 frames per second x 8 sub-fields = 480 flashes per second)."

So basically, there is no interpolation used, it just displays the image more times per second to reduce blur, whereas 120Hz LCDs use interpolation to create more frames

My Samsung LN52A650 "Touch Of Red" as the 120Hz and I love it, occasionally time/time I'm a bit iffy on it on certain movies but honestly its a great feature.

And one of the LCDs uses 240hz http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/14/s...pe-100-better/ but it's still only a prototype and not available yet
