Help with speaker set-up

I know there are many, many threads on speaker placement, but this is a quick question that those threads don't really address.

I just got the KEF 3005 package and I'm having a hard time placing the front left and right speakers. Because of an odd room layout, I have to place them either within a foot of the TV or 4 ft away. My question is: which should I choose?

I'd appreciate any input you could offer. Also, if you need any additional info (like distance from seating position or room size), please feel free to ask.
