Smile Firmware flashing capability

Greetings all, Can anyone asdvise me if Blu-ray players are firmware flashable? From my understanding firmware can update and correct problems, but some upgrades must be "hardware" (as opposed to firmware). I am in the market for a good system. I have also read about the newer version 2.0 that is forthcoming in some players. I am uncertain if this is a hardware issue or can older/current players be updated to this newer standard?
Thanks Ted :

1. Profile 2.0 requires certain hardware to be in place to work (like an internet connection). The PS3 had all the hardware necessary so it was firmware updateable to to Profile 2.0 . I am unaware of any profile 1.0/1.1 players that were 2.0 capable - until 2.0 came out there was no need for any player to have an ethernet port.

2. I believe all BluRay players are firmware updateable (because the copy protection scheme requires the ability to revoke compromised keys and add new ones, etc, IIRC). The difference is HOW they update. The PS3 updates over the internet, but most seem to update through either a USB port, where you put the update on a thumb drive and insert it into the USB port, or by using your computer to download and burn to CD rom.

Default appreciate your help

Thank you very much for your reply! RazorFromHRSnet

I currently work in a computer forensic lab and the new formats and details on Profile 2.0 appear to be cloudy and not forthcoming. Many here in the lab have chosen the PS3 because of exactly what you said (the network connectivity).

Do you think it a wise choice to go in the PS3 direction, even if the user is not a game oriented type?

I have already seen some prices on Sony Blue Ray Players drop and I predict even better pricing around XMAS. I am anticipating new Profile 2.0 players after the beginning of 2009 from what I have read. I am certain the price tag will be higher for this also

Thanks Ted

If you do a search on this website, you'll find 9(!) BD-players with BD-Live (profile 2.0) in Region-A that are currently available, including two PS3's:

I think a lot of people have gone with the PS3 as a BD player. It's pretty solid. The main drawbacks I hear about are the lack of IR Remote Support and the inability to bitstream hi res codecs on HDMI (it decodes it in the PS3 and sends it out as PCM; still lossless though!)

It depends on what you want to do with the player. PS3 does not have analog outputs for high res audio. Not an issue if you are using a newer receiver that has HDMI 1.3 inputs. PS3 as mentioned before also has a blue tooth remote. If you want to use a "universal" remote such as a harmony or other such remotes you will need an infrared to bluetooth adapter to be able to control the PS3 with the new remote. Other than that I have heard that the PS3 is a pretty solid blu-ray player.

I have a samsung 1400 standalone player and it is upgradeable via ethernet. I have performed 4 firmware updates. It has been a solid player but is version 1.0 and will not be upgradeable to 2.0. It doesn't matter to me as the online content is not important to me. I only watch the movie on my player and it does that great.
