Default Reciever help please

ok im sure this has been asked/done a million times, but to hear Dolby TrueHD sounds i need a reciever with HDMI, got that far, but im looking at bestbuy and other sites and they say the reciever doesnt have Dolby TrueHD but its still HDMI, does this matter? Will i still get TrueHD as I know the PS3 does all the work.

thanks,
and sorry for the probable re-post

if you are using the PS3 all you need is a receiver that can accept an LPCM signal over HDMI.

A lot of those cheaper receivers are "pass-through" HDMI. They can't actually take the audio out of the HDMI signal - keep that in mind before you buy a "budget" receiver.

I was wondering the exact same thing about the TrueHD, but most of the time if you want HDMI 1.3 (deep color) the receiver have the TrueHD (at least I've didn't find a receiver that had HDMI 1.3 without TrueHD decoder)

So what is the use of that?? If the receivers dont get the sound of HDMI why use 2 hdmi cable to go throught the receivers when you could go directly into the TV?

ok now heres a question, i was in 2001 audio video, and the guy said you can barely tell the difference of TrueHD sound, and that its not a good enough reason to upgrade.

crazy?

Yeah it is much better. Much smoother, more presence, kinda hard to describe but I was able to notice right away. I was kinda in the same boat as you (great TV, speakers, blu-ray, but a 10-yr-old Denon receiver with no HDMI whatsoever)... and this week I picked up a Denon AVR-988 at Circuit City on clearance for $649. Sounds AMAZING! I don't regret it at all, since I know I'll be set for the next several years.

That looks like a good price for the Onkyo, and it certainly has all the features you would need. I say go for it!

The 606 has been available in the US for a few months now, you should be able to get one up there at a reasonable price rather than the 605. If both are new the 606 should only be slightly more expensive, still less than the 705(6).

You'll notice the difference between lossy and lossless. Im used to lossless now and the other day i put a dvd in and at first was like, the sound on this sucks, why??? then duhhh realized cuz it was a dvd and not bluray...

FYI

Yamaha HTR-6160 (same as RXV663) is 499$ at Futureshop... I might be worth considering instead of the Onkyo

Hmm, I would wager to say that when you get a receiver that can play TrueHD, DTS MA, and Lossless PCM, you'll never want to play regular 5.1 again. There is a BIG difference.

More like "uninformed" than "crazy". There is a noticeable difference between the lossless and the lossy audio.
