Default PS3 game volume VS. Bluray movie

I appologize in advance if this has been asked before. I did a search but didn't find an answer.. When I play a game on the PS3 thru an Onkyo 605 or 805, the volume has to be set at about 25-30 for a good volume level. However with bluray movies (I've not tried sd dvd playback on the PS3) the volume has to be set to about 55.. is that a normal occurance or is something set better in the PS3 for game playback vs movie ?

I must do the same thing with my 605. That's a good question.

That is normal. Games play much louder than movies for me too by easily 20dB.

55 is lower than 30 right?

I know with receivers, they start at the negative, so I'm assuming negative?

If this right, a movie bases itself on it's presentation, sound is a HUGE chunk of presentation, so you probably don't have to crank it as high to get a good experience.

I'm guessing with games, they don't care AS much as a movie studio would for sound, so sound can go basic and would have to be cranked high.

(This is just my assumption BTW)

As well, don't forget, a lot of these movies have TrueHD and DTS HD-MA and uncompressed, where as, the games, are made with DD, few are made with uncompressed though

What a bad idea!

What's the big deal about turning up the volume on a movie versus the volume level of games? Doesn't ever bother me on my PS3 and Onkyo 805.

Not only DD. Some PS3 games come with uncompressed and up to 7.1.

Some are THX certified as well.

Those dont seem to help any that much, i dont really notice a difference with uncompressed games. warhawks uncompressed soundtrack sounds amazing, but so does the dolby digital........but then again, uncharteds PCM soundtrack i do notice a big change in sound when switching between dts, dolby, and pcm.
With gta4 i have to turn the reciever volume way high to get good sound.

I have the same issue on a Sony receiver.

Using positive numbers, I go up to low 40's to get a good sound on movies (I like them a bit on the loud side).

For a game, if I leave it anywhere above a 32 or so, I feel like I'm going to make something explode. I generally turn it down to the low/mid 20s, for a nice loud sound (so I can feel cars explode in CoD).

I don't mind it, but it always just seemed weird.

I'm against this person's hopefully sarcastic remark, but he DOES have a point. If the OP got a standalone, he'd no longer have the problem, because he wouldn't be able to play games on his Blu Ray player. Sounds like the type of problem I wouldn't be able to do without.

I've experienced this even worse with Disgaea 3. I have a cheap $55 HTIB, and it doesn't keep a preset sound level. Every time I turn it on, I actually have to turn the volume down from it's base (starting) level, and I've never had to do that with another game unless I'm being conscientious of others around me. Literally, the base sound on Disgaea 3 is high enough to give me a headache after a couple of minutes....

Games are louder than movies on mine. I just got used to it. Soul Calibur 4 comes on super loud. Some of the demo icons still catch me off guard at times with high volume.

Ok i think i got the op question confused. he's asking why he doesn't have to turn up the volume for games that much, but with movies he does?
i guess thats only with some games cause like i said with gta4 i have to turn my volume to atleast -15 reletive to hear everything clearly.

Are you implying that sony made the audio capabilities of the ps3 better for games than movies?

Video games have a volume within the game. Movies do not.

On my receiver, if I set the video game volume to about 50% then the movie and the game have the same volume.

It's only the fact that the volume is always cranked on games that make them louder by default.

On mine, the movies are much lower than the games. I have to turn up the movies about +15 to get it to be the same level as the game.
