Default Backing up data

I've had a very minor problem happen to my ps3. The part that controls the disc sliding in has broken. I have already contacted Sony and they have sent me both an email and a box. It would be a good idea to back up data. To back up data from a ps3, does it matter what kind of media you use? I have an external hard drive that I can use. Once I back up data on my hard drive, then I would use the restore system command to transfer the data back onto the hard drive? How do I verify that my data has been backed up successfully? If I view my hard drives contents on my computer, what does the back up file look like?

I did some reading in the online instruction manual, one other question, if you back up your data, restore the ps3 system and then restore your data, then your account user name and password are shown when you sign in or do you have to enter it in again before signing in?

Sorry to hear about your PS3. On your external, make sure its formatted FAT32 for the PS3 to recognize it. And yes, the restore command would pull the info from the backup drive to you internal PS3 HDD. As far as verifying the integrity of the backed up information, best thing I could tell you is that once the PS3 gives you the completed confirmation that everything should be ok. As far as verifying the data on your PC, I don't believe that will be possible as Sony doesn't allow the data to be readable by anything other than the PS3 that the data originally came off of. I could be wrong.

If you read the online instruction booklet, the info tells you that if you backup data off of the ps3 to storage media, the backup folders are ps3, export and then backup. I viewed the hard drives contents on my computer and those three folders are there so that tells me that everything is good.

Ok. I don't read the manuals, since I tend to figure it out by myself. Anyways, I did say I could be wrong as I was working off of memory and I'm at work so I don't have access to the instruction manual like you do.

That's cool. The online manual is very helpful because it gives information about everything that has to do with the ps3.

Once again, sorry to hear about your PS3, Gamekid. But expect a quick turnaround on your PS3 once Sony gets a hold of it, got my new replacement 60GB back from them in less than a week's time when I had to send mine off earlier this year.

I'm not concerned about the time that it'll take to get fixed.

Gamekid, I was just passing that along since in most cases, its polite to offer some good news to go along with the news of your PS3 going bad. No need to come off as pretentious, geez.

How long will it take for a prepaid box to get to me to ship my ps3 back? I live in Los Angeles, Ca. Since the disk drive broke, I would think that Sony would just switch parts, but there is always the case of getting another console. If that is the case, then Sony gives you another console of the same size or do you let them know? For example, you send in a 60 and you get another 60 returned back to you.
