Default is there a way to make the PS3 shut itself off after a while?

is there a way to make the PS3 shut itself off after a while?
(for example, 3 hours of inactivity)

if not, why doesn't Sony include this feature? it seems like a very easy
software fix to accomplish this... save power and reduce wear and tear
on the system, no?

thanks!

This feature is somewhat in Life with Playstation (formerly Folding@Home) where the system automatically shuts down after either an hour or after the current protein workunit the PS3 is working on is finished. Quite frankly, why would you leave your PS3 on for 3 hours of doing nothing is my question? If anything, have LwP kick in after whatever amount of inactivity and then set it to shut down after 1 hour

If you want, you can turn on the Auto-Start feature on Life with PlayStation (aka Folding@Home update). If you have an icon for folding@home, open it, update it and go through all the steps until you have a new icon that says Life with PlayStation.
Once you have that, go back to the icon, click the triangle button, and choose Auto-Start and select your time limit.
This will start the program after that many minutes.
Now inside LwP, go to the F@H option (click and hold square and choose the bottom channel) and then go to the triangle for options. Once there, you can set it to turn off the PS3 after the current protein is processed.
NOW.... this will not turn off your PS3 right away. In fact, it will take a long time to process a protein. So if you don't mind processing stuff for medical science and Stanford university, then it is a great way to help people out and still have your PS3 shut off after several hours.
They might have upgraded this to shut down after a specific amount of time, like 1 hour, i am not sure. Check with it.
Also make sure you go to the options and make sure everything is set the way you want for when it turns itself on (aka what channel and music).

OTHERWISE do not use this feature cause it will leave your PS3 on for a long time while it processes.

I am pretty sure you can adjust a shut-down mode, but you might have to be creative. I'll have to play with my PS3 to see if I can figure something out, assuming someone else here doesn't know the answer already.

I would like it to shut down when I'm done downloading content from the PSN store.

not yet.

But...inactivity has many different definitions for people.

There is a badge in Metal Gear that you can't get unless you hug a wall for an hour or two...or stay under the metal drum for an hour or two.

A lot of people find a quiet spot...hug the wall (let's say) and then go eat.

So you had a good point with THREE hours...I'd say it would have to be very definable for it to be any good and you would definitely HAVE to be able to turn it off.

last Friday, I received "Sex and the City" on Blu-ray...(not sure why they sent it to me, because it wasn't supposed to be released until this week....

anyway, I played the Blu-ray movie.... and went upstairs to bed. I haven't
gone downstairs to the A/V room again until today.(6 days later)

The PS3 was still on.... not playing anything... but still....

Eeeeerrrrrrffffff...

See why you'd want the auto-shutdown feature then. I have a Sony upconverting DVD player that auto-shuts down if you press <STOP> on the player/remote and leave it for a while so I could see the merits to an auto-shutdown. That would be tricky tho' with what is considered "inactivity" by the PS3 since there's always something going on with the machine especially if you're connected to the Internet and you have PSN buddies going on/offline. Maybe this will show up in a future update?

Would be a nice feature. Would like the system to shut down after recharging the controllers

I sometimes fall asleep while using my PS3 at night, mainly watching movies/TV shows. A sleep feature would be something Id want them to include in a future update. Sleep mode is a standard feature on TVs and in many media players. The PS3 should get it as well for this reason I stated

Why? Plug them into your pc to charge. Or use the wall plug like the ones for ipods to charge them. I charge my x-box controllers plugged into my ipod wall charger. Much faster usb power is a slow trickle. Usb plugged into a wall charger is much faster about twice as fast. Try that.

Yeah, I'd like a sleep timer as well and having an option to turn off the PS3 after downloads are complete sounds good also.

i agree with Life With Playstation you can set it so that it can go straight to it after so much time of inactivity and then set it up so that it automatically turns off after an hour of folding or after the current work unit is done with

This is what I use to charge my controllers:
http://www.avillagemarket.com/item_d...bestbuy8820779
It is by Katana, is officially licensed, plugs directly into a wall, and turns off after the controller is fully charged. One "drawback" is that it requires you plug a small, lightweight, well-fitting usb adapter to the controller. This adapter fits the remote perfectly, stays on securely, comes off whenever needed, and doesn't get in the way of the look of the controller of the game play.
I love it, and use it all the time. Highly recommended, especially at its low price.

I would love an auto-shutoff feature. I have a 2 year old and 3 dogs, so I've found that occasionally it will get turned on by one of them either touching the front or (more commonly) bumping the blu-ray remote.

Why not a timed deal? I would set mine to 3 hours from now. Default would be, obviously, stay on.

AKA a sleep timer.

For the amount of power this thing eats, you would think at LEAST a sleep timer would be included without forcing me to help Stanfurd.
