Check out the wikipedia site...
YES the 80GB model bundled with MGS4 will play PS2 titles (through emulation). Existing copies of the 60GB and 20GB also play PS2 games (through hardware). No other models do or will play PS2 games.
The new 80GB coming out soon will not have PS2 playback.

Does the 40GB play PS1 games? Stupid question from me since I own a 40GB model but don't own any games whatsoever.

All PS3s play PS1 games. And of course, PS3 games.

Yes. All PS3s use HDMI as well as the Sony MultiAV.

Here, check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3#Retail_configurations

The current MGS4 80GB model should be the one dated as August 2007, since it was re-packaged for the bundle.

Can you or someone out there explain what "emulation" means?

emulation is using one device to mimic another device through the use of software.

for instance. some ps3's have emulation software installed in them. when you play ps2 games, the playstation 3 will act as if it is a ps2 so that it can play the games...

So technically, any PS3 that doesn't currently play PS2 games can have this emulation software enable via Firmware?

technically yes, but sony has already said it will not be offering backwards compatibility anymore, especially not through a firmware update. they announced that at e3 this year!

so if you do not have a ps3 that can play ps2 games now, you will never be able to get one in the future, unless you buy used of course

Why does sony do that? I think its a bad move. Its just nice to have the option to be able to play them and since they used to offer it, why not continue this??

the ps2 is still a huge seller as a standalone unit. at the time of e3, the ps2 had already sold another 1.5 million units this year alone. all the time the ps2 is a cash cow for sony they will want to squeeze every penny they can from it. one way to do that is to take the the option out of the ps3, forcing consumers to purchase the ps2 as a stand alone unit.....business is business i guess

yea, they should lower the price of the new ps3's that dont offer that though... especially since the xbox 360 is now going for like $200....

i agree the ps3 does need a price cut, but remember you are still getting the main selling point of the ps3 and that is blu ray playback.

the xbox 360 is nearing the end of it's life, in terms of technology the 360 is way behind the PS3 and it is being outsold by the wii so M$ had to do something to spur sales. The ps3 is still selling well because more and more people are still adopting blu ray

I don't agree with that. The 360's being sold now have upgraded hardware, and they are able to play every brand new game release just as well as the PS3. To the point that many reviewers are saying that console choice for dual port game for those who own both the 360 and PS3 boils down to preference. Still a lot of life left in the 360's. Don't shout "bring out your dead" just yet, they feel happy...they feel happy.

Also, the new 80 gig PS3's coming out are already out and I've got one. No PS2 games play on it, which is stupid on sony's part. Not that *I* play PS2 games, but we've got some educational ones for our kids and having 3 gaming consoles hooked up annoys me.
