Firstly, welcome to the forum.

You do not necessarily need an HD receiver to watch a Blu-ray movie in Hi-def. However you might want to consider a receiver that decodes all of the audio formats of Blu-ray in order to enjoy the full listening experience. Do you have an HDTV?

Honestly thats not going to do much good for you as far as Video quality is concerned mainly because Bluray standard is 1080p which is the highest untill they come out wiht something beter then that (don't you love tech) But as far as an HD Receiver you do'nt NEED one to watch bluray only if you want to experience the best sound from bluray like the other guy mentiuoned but good look to you in the blu future. And welcome to the forums.

Complete rubish. On a 32" set, unless he is sitting <5' from the screen, he will see no advantage of 1080p vs 720p. Even at closer distances, the difference will be marginal versus the improvement over SD and DVD. Statements like this do nothing but confuse folks new to HD.

To the OP: Welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of good information from folks around here (post listed above NOT included).

1080p can be enjoyed on any screen size, you just have to sit closer.

We can see the benefit of 1080p+ on a 24" computer monitor over not seeing one on a 32" set? He always has the option of moving his chair to view 1080p on a small TV. Screen Size/Distance/Resolution. How close or far you sit from the screen is an important part of the PQ you get to see from your set.

Some Relevant Info

720p is 3x over 480 DVD so it will have better PQ.
1080p is 6x over DVD and will have better PQ over 720p provided that contrast, color and the rest of the system is up to par.

Then you are good to go.

720p is HD as well, even if some people will try to tell you differently. And since you're using HDMI, you're getting a HD picture.

With time you can upgrade your HD experience. You might want to go for a 5.1 or even 7.1 speaker system in the future. Having surround sound instead of your TV's speakers will probably improve your enjoyment more than getting a 1080p display.

And then yes, you'd need an AVR.

Enjoy your Blu's!
