just found what this guy has said on yahoo answers to the question can i get dts master audio if my reciever only does normal dts .
the PS3 does the decoding and does not output Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA. Instead it outputs 5/6/7.1 PCM which the receiver can handle. All you have to do is make sure the receiver actually supports audio off the HDMI connection. If it states that the connection is for passthrough only then you will likely not get this to work. Budget receivers often only have this passthrough options and therefore only act as an HDMI switcher. think ive had it then im confused now how do you tell if a reciever supports audio off the hdmi, i always thought if a reciever had hdmi in and out you were ready for hd sound. The receiver cannot do passthrough. If it does, then you will not get PCM and the high def codecs with the PS3. I believe you had a link posted earlier to a receiver. I couldn't tell for sure but if I was to guess I'd guess that receiver does not support HDMI audio.

A general rule of thumb would be that if the receiver <$300, it probably will not accept audio over HDMI. The same could be said for most HTIB receivers. The specs should say something like "HDMI audio passthrough", which indicates it will not accept audio over HDMI, and simply passes it through to the TV's speakers. |

Check out the specs when looking at a receiver. If it claims HDMI pass thru then you'd want to avoid that receiver because it WILL NOT do anything with the audio except pass it thru to the TV.(Won't process audio and nothing comes out your stereo speakers.)
Make sure to look for something that is HDMIv1.2 or 1.3(Best) You won't need anything real expensive that handles TrueHD or DTS-HDMA. |

It doesnt do anything to the audio or picture it just switches it from one input to the other. Imagine train tracks, only one train can go at a time, so they must switch the tracks in order for the next train to go. Same thing with an HDMI switcher...its just a pass through. So you will need an opitcal cable or rca cable to get sound. Hope all that made sense.
