Onkyo 606 is what I have. I love it.
Just remember that the PS3 can't bitstream Dolby True HD and DTS-MA. You have to set the PS3 to LPCM. Otherwise you'll be listening to the core Dolby and DTS tracks. Last edited by bandit29; 04-02-2009 at 07:11 PM. |

the sony 720 cannot decode the new hd codecs but seeing as you have a ps3 which does the decoding for you the 720 would work great, you can probably get one for $250. Or you can look at the onkyo 606 or the yamaha 663 for under $400. Just depends on how much you are willing to spend

I'd put the Onkyo 606 as the best overall option, the Yamaha 663 as the more expensive option that has a few additional bells and whistles if you want them, and the Sony 720 as an option if you can't find the others and need to make a purchase today.

I have the Denon 2809ci and love it. My best friend has an Onkyo 606 and he loves that. I have noticed that the Onkyo runs louder and is missing a few bells and whistles. But still an awesome choice.

only one setting will give you the hd codecs and that will be setting the ps3 to LPCM and NOT bitstream. PS3 cannot bitstream the new codecs, only LPCM

Yamaha RX-v465 for $329 SHIPPED from Crutchfield
May be cheaper somewhere else but you can search. 105 x 5 4 HDMI IN Decodes all the codecs. This has to be the budget champ if you only need 5.1 right now. |

You indicated that you will be using the PS3 as the BD player so you don't need a receiver that "decodes the highdef sound" as the PS3 will be doing the decoding. Many people are suggesting the Onkyo 606, I have no experience with Onkyo but they were on my short list before I purchased my receiver. Anyways the things you should be looking for in your receiver 192kHz/24-bit processing pretty standard now on new equipment 3-4 HDMI in - V1.3a or HDMI V1.3 switching and V1.1 repeating (V1.1 minimum to carry the HD Audio tracks) 8-channel input 8-channel pre amplifier outs - not available on many entry level receivers but there are a few out there There are many other options available for a receiver but in my opinion the above should be the "minimum requirements" when looking ![]() |
