Default THX Select2 on top of PCM stream direct

Just wondering if THX mode can be applied on top of PCM stream direct mode.
I tried but Stream direct light goes off one you select THX. Are these two separate modes?, any comment on this.
Thanks

Don't think so, imo direct is the best no altering of signal.

It's one or the other, not both.

You can overlay PLIIx and THX on PCM 5.1 to get 7.1 but on 7.1 won't work.
THX should work on any sound formats as sound enhancement.

What receiver do you have? On my Onkyo, 'Direct' is essentially a mode. You press the button to select direct and the little blue light comes on. In this mode, you are receiving and playing the unaltered PCM track (no enhancements whatsoever). You can't apply THX or anything else to this, or alse it will no longer be direct.

I have pioneer Elite VSX91THX, and pure direct for analog 5.1 stream and stream direct for PCM/LPCM mufti channel input, maybe higher end receiver can do this over $1500?

Direct Mode means exactly that. The signal received is delivered directly to your speakers without being altered by the receiver. If you are using Direct Mode, the receive will not alter the signal path at all.

What Onkyo do you have? Cause on my 805 "direct" mode is different than Pure Audio. Pure Audio, when selected is when the little blue light comes on.

No worries. But I am still trying to figure out what the difference is between the 2, do you know?

Well, from what the manual says (I would like confirmation my self): Pure Audio just turns off the display and the video processing circuits (which are not used any way if you are 100% HDMI connected). All audio DSP's are still available including bass management. Having this mode implies that the display and the video processors create audible noise. If so, has any body been able to hear the noise?

The "Direct Mode" bypasses all digital processing, including bass management. It would be primarily used for analog inputs IMO. For example, my old Denon 3300's 5.1 analog input bypassed all DSP circuits including bass management. It just took the 5.1 analog input, amplified it, and sent it to the speakers. Denon did not call it "Direct Mode", but that was in affect what it was.

So Pure Audio would be the best mode for watching and listening to movies if your using HDMI?

That is the way I understand it. I tried switching Pure Audio on and off last night for testing and I could not tell the difference. My guess is that the display and the video processors create very little noise, but some people may be able to tell the difference.

Yea I usually always run it on Pure Audio I just wanted to make sure Direct wasnt better. But on a THX certified DVD or the new Indiana Jones I use THX

Is THX only available with 5 speakers? I got rid of my 5.1 and am only running 3.1 right now. It says THX is not available...if that is the case what would be the best listening mode for my set up? I already did the Audysey Calibration. BTW the ED A2-300 rocks!!! Just got it today and now I hope my neighbors don't start hating me

Just a quick question for the onkyo 705, I have multichannel, direct, and pure audio. If I remember correctly one of them ignores your audyssey settings or was it your crossover setting for each speaker. Is this true, or did I just make it up in my head with all this information overload?

To answer your question direct and pure audio(i think) ignores the audyssey settings but not the crossover for each speaker.
I have an ONKYO 875 connected with a PS3 via HDMI. I'm an audio freak and i played a lot with all of the parameters of the receiver.
I really have to say that i always watch all my BDs in the multichannel mode. The reason is that if an audyssey calibration took place properly you need these settings (cause it definately "enriches"of "fixes" the sound).
The only way you're gonna get them is using the multichannel option. Don't bother using (i've tryed it and it sucks) THXultra2 or Select on top of the analog sound coming out of your player just to hear the 7.1 out of 5.1.
It degrades the sound a lot. Now i have a question:

Anybody using a BD player with bitstreaming capabilities?(like panasonic BD-30 or 35). Does bitstreaming raw sound to the receiver(provided that the receiver is able to decode all the HD formats) produse better acoustic results that onboard decoding?
And finally do you get even better results, applying the THXUltra2 processing, in this bitstreamed sound?

I'd appreciate the help on this, cause i think of buying a BDplayer with audio bitstreaming capabilities in the near future. Thanx.

First comment on PCM mode. For pure direct in my receiver manual sad:
PURE DIRECT – Analog sources are heard without
any digital processing. No sound is output from the
Speaker B in this mode.

DIRECT – Sources are heard according to the
settings made in the Surround Setup (speaker
setting, channel level, speaker distance, acoustic
calibration EQ, and X-curve), as well as with dual
mono, the input attenuator, and any sound delay and
hi-bit/hi-sampling settings. You will hear sources
according to the number of channels in the signal

I found out for THX mode select2 cinema, you need 7.1 speakers and when use with 5.1 source, thx will add and enhance sound for two extra speakers, though this is for vsx92 and vsx94 model (higher then my)

Now decoding high definition audio on blu-ray player or in receiver, is for debate. Please have a look good post in ours forum
