Default HDD Help

Okay...so I have a 60gb PS3. Now, I'm runnin out of space!! I got like 5 gigs left. I know you can upgrade the HDD of the PS3, but I don't know which one to buy. And another thing, how would I transfer the old files to the new HDD?

Look for a 2.5" SATA hard drive, Newegg.com has good prices on them, you can also find good clearance prices at big box stores if you are lucky. When I transfered to my new HDD I used a USB flash drive since I didn't have very much on it, sounds like you will need an external hard drive since you are using 55 gigs of it right now. I'm not sure if you can just toss it in an external closure and copy them that way. That would probably be the cheapest route if possible, since I've seen some external closures for only a few dollars online.

You're going to have to use a backup USB drive with enough capacity to use the Backup data option on the PS3. I too had about 55 gigs used up, and it took a little over an hour to backup the data even after deleting non-essential data. Once you do that, then you can replace the internal hard drive. Once that's up and running, it'll be another hour to restore everything from the backup drive. Trust me though, the wait is worth it. All game saves, downloaded games, user settings, pics, etc. will be back.

Tip: Delete anything you don't absolutely need before you start the backup process. Pics, movie clips, whatever. Delete game installs from disc-based games like GTA IV, and MGS4. Those are under the "Game Data Utility" folder. Those two games I mentioned are over 4 gigs each. Don't delete anything under "Saved Data Utility" though..that's self-explanatory. Skimming the amount of data will lessen the backup and restore time, during which it could be vulnerable to data corruption if the power were to say, fail.

Hope that helps.
