Exclamation Upgrading Your Hard Drive

** How-To Guide to Upgrading Your Hard Drive **

(Best walk through on the Planet)

Removing / replacing the hard disk

The following section explains how to remove and replace the hard disk.

Caution

* For safety reasons, be sure to turn off and unplug the system before
attempting to remove or install the hard disk.
* Remove the hard disk in a location out of the reach of small children to help
prevent accidental swallowing of small parts such as the screws.
* The inside of the system is hot directly after use. Allow time for the system
to cool down before starting to remove the hard disk.
* Be careful not to injure yourself when removing or handling the hard disk.
* Be sure to reattach the HDD bay cover before turning the PS3™ system on.
If the cover is not attached, it may cause heat to build up inside the system.

Notices

* All hard disks, including a PS3™ hard disk must be reformatted before use in a PS3™
system. However, reformatting may not occur if the original PS3™ hard disk is reinstalled
onto the original PS3™ system that was provided with the PS3™ hard disk, and such PS3™
hard disk has not been previously reformatted.
* The PS3™ system cannot execute any content stored on a hard disk of any other computer
or operating system, including a PS3™ hard disk that has been reformatted.
* It is recommended that you regularly back up any data on the hard disk that is of a type that
can be backed up. If for any reason software or data loss or corruption occurs, it may not be
possible to restore or repair the software or data. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and its
subsidiaries and affiliates will not be liable for damage or injury related to software or data
loss or corruption.
* The PS3™ hard disk is intended for use with the PS3™ system, and it may not be possible to
execute content stored on a PS3™ hard disk on any other operating system.
* Improper removal or installation of a hard disk may cause damage to your PS3™ system or
loss of data, and may void your PS3™ hardware warranty. SCEA shall not be liable for any
resulting damages, including any damages to your hard disk. User assumes all risks and
liabilities associated with using a replacement hard disk, including any incompatibility or
interoperability problems with the PS3™ system. Services will not be provided on any
non-PS3™ hard disks.

Removing the hard disk

1. Touch the power button on the system front for at least two seconds.

*The power indicator will turn solid red and the system will enter standby mode.

2. Turn off the system using the main power switch on the system rear.

3. Unplug the AC power cord and detach the other cables from
the system.

* For safety reasons, remove the plug for the power cord from the electrical outlet,
and then detach the other cables.

4. Remove the HDD bay cover on the system's left side.

Why would anyone wanna add more GB to their hard drive? 60 GB is good enough for me. I download stuff from the PS Network and after I watch/play them I delete them because there's no point in having them

I think a lot of people are starting to use the PS3 as a media center, where they can store and access their videos, music, photos etc and then it's really nice to have a large hard drive

I, for one, had wished on one particular day that I had a bigger hard drive.

I have a 60gb PS3 and between the music, photos and video clips I have loaded onto it from my PC, I have ony about 30gb free.

Well on that one particular day I speak of I went to the Sony store to see what they had for new demos, add-ons, movie trailers, etc. and they had the AC/DC Live at Donnington available - not the trailer but the entire show/concert for download for FREE! (in 1080p I have to add) .

I did not have enough room on my hard drive (I needed 36gb of space) and my PS3 knew there wasn't enough room so it wouldn't even try to let me download. I realized after a day and some thinking that I could delete stuff I already had on there - as I could reload from my PC again and download AC/DC but it had already been removed.

I think it was a mistake and they didn't mean to make the entire concert video available (for free no less) and then pulled it when the found out it was there.

I think if I transferred all our music and video clips (home video stuff) that I could fill up 100gb+, so I could see some people wanting this info.

My $.02

Default Recommend a good upgrade drive for the PS3?

Brand, speed, etc?

I've heard that sometimes there can be compatibility issues with the PS3 actually recognizing the new drive...so one you've used and just popped in with no huge issues.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&name=5400+RPM

Any of these will be fine, in fact any 2.5 inch Serial ATA150 will do. You could go with 7200 speed but I am not really convinced it will give a benefit worth the extra price. The stock hdd is 5400 anyway.

I would pick Seagate for the brand, but they don't have anything bigger than 120 gig on newegg.com They used to have a 160, which is what I have in my PS3. Western Digital would be my second choice.

And I wouldn't buy Toshiba based on principle hehe

i don't think the price increase is worth it either. but if they're close in price, for sure get the 7200rpm

I'm wary of any drive with rpm higher than what the PS3 shipped in. Remember that with higher RPM come more heat.

Ideally, the power consumption of the new drive should be same or lower than what was shipped on the PS3. You don't want to inadvertently introduce the red ring of death to your PS3 like some 17-30% of the currentgen xbox360s.

And don't throw away the stock hard drive. You'll need to replace it if you ever have to claim warranty from Sony.

heat isn't going to be a problem imo. and chances are if you do your homework, you may even find a 7200 drive thats actually cooler

Default Replaced mine with:

This:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152094

Interestingly, the 80 gig I pulled out was a Seagate Momentus. Bought a really cheap metal mesh enclosure for it:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817193034

Got the enclosure for 9 bucks and change.

Partitioning options need improvement. Your only choices are 10 gig for GameOS (PS3 stuff), the rest for OtherOS (psUbuntu ), or 10 gig for OtherOS and the rest for GameOS.

Go to Cosco and buy a 250 GB WD passport external drive for $139.
Carefully open it and inside you will find a WD Scorpio SATA drive.

Now remove the original oem drive from your PS3 and replace it with the 250 GB drive.
Take the original ps3 drive and place it into the WD passport case.

Now you have a 250 GB drive in your PS3 and a working 40, 60 or 80 GB external drive depending on what ps3 unit you purchased.

I did mine and it works great.

Can you please tell me how to transfer data from this hard drive
to a new one before changing it out?
Is that called the Backup Utility? I don't have another hard drive yet, (going to buy) so I didn't use the feature to find out yet.
