Default Sony BDP-S550 Optical Audio Question

Once the S550 decodes the necessary audio stream, can that lossless PCM signal be sent out through toslink (fiber optic) cable?

I currently have an older receiver that can only recieve optical audio.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You will only get the core 5.1 over an optical cable.

Lossless 5.1/7.1 audio cannot be sent over the optical/coax digital line (though I believe the player will send 2-channel PCM audio over the line if you select down mix in the menu).

I'll assume you're receiver can process DD/DTS bitstreams. If you set the player Audio Output Priority to "Coaxial/Optical" and the Dolby Digital and DTS settings to "Dolby Digital" and "DTS" respectively, your AVR will receive the bitstream for DD/DTS - whether you're playing a standard DVD or BD.

If your AVR has multi-channel inputs, you can have the player decode the lossless audio and send that to your receiver - but not over the optical connection.

Default HDMI 1.1 Vs 1.3

Will HDMI 1.1 support TrueHD and DTS HDMA?

If the player converts the TrueHD or DTS HD MA audio to PCM, the signal can be transmitted over any version of HDMI. If the TrueHD or DTS HD MA signal is transmitted via bitstream to a receiver, HDMI 1.3 will be needed. For additional information, read A Guide to Home Theater Audio Codecs.

I suppose I'm s... outta luck. My next question would be, what are the benefits of the 550 if I'm only going to turn around and need a new reciever anyways to get the HD audio (thinking the Onkyo SR-705) ??

Has the hardware changed at all from the 350 vs. the 550 ??

There are plenty of cables you can get that will change the audio input.
