Default How do you feel about remakes?

After hearing about Oldboy AND Karate Kid I wanted to know how everyone else feels about them. I for one think they are totally unnecessary, unless the original was crap (silent hill is remake worthy). I understand that there is a market out there for them but it seems like thats all that is being released. Hollywood probably figured that is bank after they make millions off of the butchered J Horror remakes. Ok I am done, what do you guys think!?

Mostly in recent years, the remake's have been for horror movies and I am not a fan of the genre anyway, so it's not been a huge problem for me.

Overall I don't mind so much, as long as it's well done and not just a cheap quick money grabbing scheme by some third rate producer and director.

You must remember also that remake are not new, Hollywood as been remaking movies all the time. So it's not just a new thing. The difference is now with the Internet and forum like this, it's much easier for people to complaint about it if the movie is a total disaster.

I would say it can be sometimes a good thing if done well specialy for movies of the scifi/fantasy type. But as long as they keep the scenario well done and the directing and acting perfect. A lot of time these days, there is a let down and too much reliance on the special effects.

Guess it depends on the movie. No doubt there are some that will never be touched. I would prefer to see new and original moves. The 2 remakes of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, actually was only one remakes, TCM "The Beginning" is supposed to be prequel, I didn't mind, but there just seems to be a overload of horror remakes heading our way. There has been much discussion on this board about the Halloween remake, and early next year, we have a new Friday the 13th movie. A New Nightmare On Elm Street is released in 2010. iIt almost seems like every horror movie I saw 20-25 years ago is being remade. I just read that Wes Craven's "The Last House On The Left" is being redone. Also "My Bloody Valentine" has been redone in 3D. And also saw a remake happening of "April Fools Day" <sigh>. We've had countless remakes the last few years, the ones mentioned above, and things like "The Hills Have Eyes" etc. I try and take each one for what it is, but, please, some original stuff would be appreciated

I'm not a fan of remakes. However for the big horror franchises like Halloween (hated the remake), Friday the 13th, NoES, Texas Chainsaw etc... I can understand the need to re-start or re-boot the franchises. There's some properties you just can't let die. Which is fine if their given the proper treatment. Though now a days all you see are remakes which blows as I'd really like some original material. Then you have movies like The Karate Kid most recently among other movies which really are annoying that their remaking. So before I start rambling on lets just say I'm definitely not a fan of remakes but you can hardly blame them (the studios).

For the most part they're unnecessary, and certainly Hollywood has gone way overboard with them (Hollywood trendy? Get out of town!). But at the end of the day, so what? They're just movies and nobody ever said you have to see them all. Watch the ones that interest you and skip the ones that don't. The intense outrage over remakes that you can find on the internet is pretty silly. A remake CANNOT "ruin" an older movie. The original is still there, untouched for all who wish to see it. Hell, sometimes the remake may even spark an interest in the older film. Stubborn people who will only watch the remake and not give the original a chance wouldn't watch and enjoy the original anyway.

I don't have a problem with remake if they don't screw with the storyline. The Fog remake sucked, so did Amityville Horror. I did enjoy Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, but they didn't change the story.

I think they're fine if someone has something new to bring to the story. Hayao Miyazaki once said that the arts are like a baton race, and one artist is merely handing off ideas to another. I say -- don't get your panties in a bunch, don't let Harold J. Knowles do your thinking for you, don't allow your emotions to cloud your ability to think, and take each case on a separate basis. There have been many wonderful movies that were remakes of previous movies -- and haven't we all seen films that had strong ideas but missed the mark (i.e. Hook, The Black Hole) and we've longed to remake them and set the ship right?

Truly, there are only three reasons to remake a movie:

a) The original idea was good, but the execution was lacking
b) The original execution was good, but modern technology can enhance and improve the original
c) The original had political or social messages that weren't timely but have become timely now -- in other words, the work is relevant again and needs to be retold

Spielberg can take Oldboy and make a Western out of it for all I care as long as he brings something new to the table. As for the Karate Kid remake, well, we're not exactly talking about remaking Lawrence of Arabia. The Karate Kid films were always pulp, cheap, rabble rousers, and the last two films were already a bit of a joke (some might say the last three, but I liked the second one), so I don't see why people are upset about Round 5.

I played the whole series, and its my favorite series. They captured the town great, and the story was good. But the lack of demons and some of the worst acting EVER made me really dislike the movie.

I think it depends really on the movie for one, and how old it is. For example, remaking Willy Wonka is ok in my mind, even though the first one is the greatest, but i am totally against the remake of The Karate Kid...

in general I hate them and think they are unnecessary especially when they try to remake a classic that was perfect the way it was.

however, if the person doing it is interesting then on an extremely rare occasion I can accept it or look forward to it.

for example; I'm interested to see what Aronofsky will do with Robocop even though I love the original. I think he will delve more into the inner struggle of the cyborg and will feature some interesting visuals

No, it was an adaptation of a novel. If you're refering to the earlier animated versions, they have absolutely nothing to do with the film version. It was "let's turn this book into a movie", not "let's remake these cartoons in live action!"

Peter Jackson said he used the "Proudfeet" moment in homage to the animated film. Regardless of the the medium, Jackson's films were the second motion pictures to approach the Tolkein Rings works. So they're remakes. Accept it and move on.
