Default US Blu-ray "The Thing" Region Code?

Hi everyone. Could someone who owns the US version of The Thing on Blu Ray definitively tell me if it is region A locked or not. It's due out over here in the UK on December 1st but, criminally, it will not be anamorphic widescreen which is essential. In fact, could someone also confirm the US version is anamorphic as well. Much appreciated.

Why wouldn't it be 16:9 anamorphic? Every Blu-ray is. The US Blu for The Thing has very little for extras though.

Actually, I think your wrong about all blu-rays being anamorphic or 16:9! L.A. Confidential is 16:9 but in answer to the question here, the U.S. version of "The Thing," which I own, is Widescreen 2.35:1. It fills my 60" 16:9 TV but there are black bars on the top and bottom!

It is amazing that folks still don't totally understand what 16:9 is... L.A. Confidential IS 16:9 enhanced so that it fits your television, the black bars belong in this case since the film was shot in a 2.35:1 ratio. 16:9 = 1.78:1(sometimes cropped 1.85:1), which would be the ratio for say Hollywoodland, Easter Promises, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Signs, Saw just to name a few. You can have L.A. Confidential or The Thing take up your entire screen if you stretch the image, but that is not how it should be presented.

That's strange. I could have swore when I watched this on Halloween it completely filled my screen with no black bars at all. I'll have to watch it again later and check this out.

All John Carpenter films are 2.35:1 (). If there were no black bars then it was not presented correctly.

No reason why it shouldn't, although as I mentioned in my first e-mail the UK version is out on December 1st with all the extras of the standard DVD, which the US version appears to forfeit, but at the expense of an anamorphic picture. I've got the extras on the standard DVD so the picture is of utmost importance and, as is often the case, we will be receiving an inferior product. Anyway, I've found out all I need to know about the US disc and ordered it so job done. Thanks for eveyones help and input.

Anamorphic enhancement is no longer applicable for Blu-ray. It's native 1.78:1.

No Blu-rays are anamorphic.

Job done - not. The US Blu-ray of The Thing isn't 'anamorphic' either.

suppressing a part of the movie's image hardly qualify as an "enhancement" in my book

Beg your pardon? The movie was 2.35:1 theatrically, and it is 2.35:1 on Blu-ray. No part of the movie has been suppressed.

Okay.

Well I have L.A. Confidential and it does not fit my television - it has black bars, as it should.

I actually was watching LA CONFIDENTIAL last night-- this is a 2:35 aspect
movie (like THE THING which I also own) and of course there ARE black
bars-- it should not default to fill the screen on ANY tv unless it's set to
"fill"

OK, then is it 'extreme widescreen' ie where the black bars take up a third of the screen above and below the picture and the picture itself the other third or is it, to use the standard DVD technical term, enhanced for 16:9 TV?

Yes, and in the process of being remade is In the Mouth of Madness, Escape from New York, and The Thing will either be a remake or prequel (although it doesn't really matter, even a prequel will be nothing more than a remake).
