I know this is probaly answered somewhere, but if you have a Blu Ray player with onboard decoding of all audio formats, and a receiver that with all the latest audio formats, is it better to have blu ray player do it or the receiver??

Depends upon the player and the reciever.
Can the player bitstream those audio formats to the receiver? How are you sending the audio to the player, analog or hdmi? Which has better DAC's the player or the receiver? IMHO, I would say if your player is capable, to bitstream the audio over hdmi to the receiver. |

no. The receiver DAC's will be used. The player DAC's are only used if decoded in the player and sent out over the player's analog connections.

OK, so I have a question. I have the Panasonic BD30, which does not decode internally. I was reading about bitstream vs. PCM, and for the fun of it, I switched the settings on my player from bitstream to PCM output via HDMI. Now a BD movie that used to display as Dolby True-HD on my TX-SR605 receiver now shows as Multichannel. I am still hearing everything, but am I getting Dolby True-HD?

If you want to hear any of the interactive sounds, the decoding must be done in the player.
