should I have the Hdmi setting on Pcm or auto, those are the only 2 options does auto just adjust to whatever sound you select on the disc? Im just not tech savy, I know this player doesnt support dts hd, but if I have the setting to pcm and select dts sound on the disc, i will only get pcm, right? can someone explain

You want to select PCM on the player for TrueHD sound.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=724

You will get all the codecs except DTS-HDMA, they will just be decoded internally and sent LPCM to the player. On your receiver it will show "Multichannel", "PCM", or something of the sort. You are still getting the right codec, that is how the player displays it because it is receiving a PCM signal.

The BDP 300 cannot play TrueHD audio... I think your only option for HD audio is PCM.

I will post the same link I posted in the last post, guess you didn't click on it. According to our Sony Insider, it is possible.

A couple of points to know first:

I checked this with firmware 3.7, but it applies to several earlier releases going back to when the feature first appeared on the S1.

It is not an advertised feature of the S300, It could be removed at any time in a future firmware release.

DO NOT call Sony customer service and hassle them about why this does not show up in the information display or in the manual. As mentioned before, this is an unadvertised feature. Consider it a gift.

The only setting that matters is the HDMI audio setting. It MUST be set to LPCM, or Dolby THD will only come out of the HDMI connection as DD. The downmix setting does not matter.

Dolby THD will only be decoded and passed as LPCM on the HDMI connector. If you want to confirm if you are really getting THD versus DD, try the following: Connect your receiver analog inputs to the analog outputs of the S300, set the HDMI audio output to LPCM and connect the HDMI output to your receiver as well, playback a THD audio stream and use your receiver to toggle between the analog input or the HDMI input, better yet, have someone else do the switching for you. If these do not sound the same to you, you have learned something. Now try the same thing with a normal DD stream and see if you hear the same difference, if not....

For those of you who will continue to question this until the sun burns out, someone makes a test disc to confirm it, or someone dedicated does an invert/add of the analog out vs. the HDMI THD out, keep in mind that I don't do this for a hobby and I don't have anything to gain by misleading you.

JASON R:

Regarding your above message concerning audio playback from the BDP-S300:

If you look at Page 48 of the manual, your explanation is exactly what it says. All this discussion about whether the BDP-S300 can decode Dolby TrueHD is in writing, but not easily understood.

TrueHD via HDMI (pcm) yields 5.1 CH LPCM

DTS-HD via HDMI (pcm) yields 5.1 CH LPCM

Dolby Digital Plus via (pcm) yields 7.1 CH LPCM

DTS via HDMI (pcm) yields 5.1 CH LPCM

Dolby Digital via HDMI (pcm) yields 5.1 CH LPCM

LPCM 5.1 via HDMI (pcm) yields 5.1 CH LPCM

NO DTS MASTER AUDIO !

My question is whether DTS and Dolby Digital via the Digital Coax jacks sounds any different or better than what is obtained via HDMI (pcm). Are you better to have the receiver decode DTS and Dolby Digital rather than listening to LPCM ?????

I would say it doesn't matter, unless you are applying certain soundfields that can only be applied during bitstreaming. There is great sticky concerning that.

The manual is wrong I can get DTS-HD MA out of the 300, 500, and 2000ES.

This is straight from Sony.

you can get the "core" dts, not the Lossless MA.

Let me see if I understand you correctly Crack... you're saying the latest firmware on the 2000ES supports DTS-HD?

And if your receiver supports the DTS-HD, can you just us that for the audio processing?

thanks
