Default Surround Problem

I have been using the stereo speakers on my TV for a while but about a week ago I pulled out my 5 year old 5.1 Altec Lansing speakers to try out.

Now for the problem. I swear, everytime a good sounding movie starts, (ex. Wall-E, Cars) the sound is just breathtaking and its so much better than the TV speakers. But for some reason, by the end of the movie everything sounds so dull and in some cases I get literally sick feeling from the sound. I dont have the sound blasting loud, so I dont know why this happens.

Anyone have an idea about why this is happening?

Sick as in headache or discomfort? That could be sound fatigue.

I don't get headaches but the sounds just sound really annoying and dull, opposed to the bright and dynamic sounds I hear at the beginning of the movie. And I know it sounds stupid but I have put it off and tried watching about five more movies (blu-ray and dvd) and the same thing happens every time. I also feel really tired, even when watching in the middle of the day.

That sounds like sound fatigue. It could be something else though. Maybe it's LFE syndrome (makes you tired- according to a few members here and myself).

what type of speaker wire and gauge are you using? do some research on ohms and voltage and see if it applies to what you are experieincing.

Sadly, its an all in one computer 5.1 system. So its basically 1 headphone jack for the center, and the rest are like modified RCA cables. Im just wondering if Its even worth looking into a real system when I cant enjoy it anyways. At the same time, it could be the crappy speakers doing it so I dont know.

Although I can tolerate HTIB for my PC, my HT system deserves better. I had already spent over $2000 for the HDTV and BD player, so it made sense to me to sink another $2000, actually a lot more, into the AVR , 7 speakers, and a subwoofer. I never get listening fatigue by the end of a movie or even after a couple of movies.

Yeah I'd maybe guess listening fatigue. The sound may be too bright and harsh and ends up just ... wearing you out.

Have you tried going over to a friend's place and watching a whole movie on their setup? Does the same thing occur? How about at the theater? Same, or are you ok?

It may be the speakers, or it may be you, or it may be a combination of both. You might have to do some shopping to find what sounds comfortable to you.

Ive never been bothered by the theater speakers or any tv/computer speakers. Ill be picking up a better quality htib in a couple weeks so ill just have to wait till then and see how i react to those.
Hopefully its the speakers and not me

Simple test: Pause your player, shut off your amp for a few minutes, turn it back on, see if it sounds good or bad. That will let you know if your receiver/amp is getting hot, and not playing efficiently.

If it does sound better, you could have a problem with the receiver. You can also tell if you have sound fatigue - just eardrums getting burned out from listening to too much, for too long. Since you're not playing at very loud volume, that may not be it.

Good luck!

No amp.... no receiver. PC speakers plugged in to the headphone out on the tv.

Oh, I misunderstood. Since that's the case, I'm willing to bet that the miniscule amp in the TV is just not up to two hours of driving the big coils in real speakers.

It will just flatten out the sound. Capacitors that try to hold juice for louder passages will just heat up, poop out, and everything will go flatter than a pancake.

It's not fatigue on the part of the human - it's fatigue on the part of the electronics.
