Default First stand-alone BD/SACD player

Hi,

If we don't consider PS3, which Blu-ray manufacturer do you think will launch the first SACD compatible BD player?

Place your bets!

I think it wouldn't be odd if Pioneer were the first. Pioneer seems to be manufacturing its first SACD/CD player: D6.

Pioneer has come from DVD-Audio only to Universal to SACD, so.... why not a BD/DVD/SACD/CD player?

Cheers!

My guess would be Philips, Sony's partner in SACD.

Last year, my guess was Sony. (In fact I recall replying to this poll but I don't see my response here so perhaps I posted in the same thread on a different message board?)

By now (after seeing Sony's CES 2007, CEDIA 2007 and CES 2008 product announcements still without a sign of an SACD-compatible BD player other than PS3) I'm shifting my hopes to Oppo.

Lol. Too true. I'm still confused about the logic in all that. Isn't Pioneer actually making the Sony players still though? That's the only thing I can figure. If Pioneer's current BD drive mechanisms don't support SACD then I imagine Sony's players won't either. But it is pretty sad. They can get a compatible drive into their gaming system but not their ES-series BD player. What has the world come to?

It's Sony's product. why don't they support SACD on all their players?
It seems srtange, especially on Blu-ray players, when HDMI is the ideal carrier for multichannel audio.
Does the PS3 play SACD?

Yes, it does via HDMI.

Correct, but beware: only the 20, 60 and 80GB units do -- the 40GB version doesn't.

See the PS3 SACD FAQ.

Well, it's not a matter of prejudice. The PS3 was the first BD/SACD player and I was wondering what would be next.

If Denon does a Blu-Ray/SACD/DVD-Audio player (now that HD-DVD is presumably gone), that would be a sweet machine. One box, all "good" formats!

I wouldn't be surprised to see an SACD/BD player from Pioneer.
Their Elite line of DVD players all support DVD-Audio and SACD and their European units support DSD natively as well.

Cool looking unit they've got there - thanks for the pics.

Seems like CES 2008 is a disappointment for those looking forward to a high end Blu-ray player that includes SACD. I really thought there would be a Pioneer Elite announcement with more details than what we have heard.

Still no BD/SACD player from Pioneer. It's great to see they continue to support SACD where they can. Of the four new home theatre systems they're releasing in Europe this fall three will feature BD, another will play SACD, but still none both.

See this thread.

I didn't think this included SACD support? They announced a new standalone SACD player in their ES line (SCD-XA5400ES) as part of the same release, but I don't think 5000ES integrates that ability.
