hi
i have a question about the real capacity of blu ray discs the faq says it is 25 gb, but it is not clear, there is big confusion about what is a gb, if 1024^3 or 1000^3, and obviously, in fact, the blu ray disc capacity measured from software is not any of the two it seems i can not record more than approx 24,220,000,000 bytes i expected it was 25 billions exactly, not so less in fact dvds are told 4.7 gb and they are 4,700,000,000 so, it is me having problems or it is true blu ray discs can store only 24 billions and few more bytes? my system xp sp3, writer lg ggw h20l with latest firmware programs tried: nero 8, ashampo burning studio 8, imgburn 2.4 thx |

capacity of hard drives and disks is sadly used as a marketing tool.
one gig is = 1024 MB but is rounded to 1000 for marketing yet 1gb will still take up 1024mb so you lose 24mb per gig when you look at what is really space vs what your told. so on a 25 gig disk you would lose 600mb, now mb also meet the same demise so they are rounded to 1000 from 1024 as well. so total space is not really taken up by the file structure like everyone thinks that's only a small part of it. the bigger the drive the more you lose, the file structure stays the same but the rounding gets bigger and bigger |

yes i have read your replies, but i had the doubt because when we consider 1 gb as 1,000,000,000 the size lost is already computed
so, the size should be 1. 25 * 1024^3 = old mode, and microsoft mode 2. 25 * 1000^3 = new mode so i expected the size being exactly 25 bln bytes, knowing the dvds instead, the size is even smaller, and the loss is not the rounding from 1024 to 1000 the sole useful info can be the link provided above, i find very strange in the whole internet (google search) it does not exist a precise amount for the "defects" thx |
