Question Blu-ray Shortage?? (Production capacity shortfall).

In the past week I have received at least 5 emails from amazon saying that they are still trying to source blu rays for me. These include mainly Paramount titles and most recently Cloverfield and There will be Blood.

Is there a problem producing the quantities required?? I cannot believe they are not pressing enough of these to meet demand. I have had both on pre-order the day they were announced. What’s going on?

I hope this is discussed and not brushed under the carpet as a taboo subject. It needs to be discussed if there is a problem with production capacity.

it has to do with amazon i believe. they are prob pressing enough, but it happens enough times where amazon orders a ton initially and then the preorders exceed the initial order so then they have to order more. of course, they are not at the back of the bus and it takes longer.

i have also been in the position where amazon screwed up internally and put me in a holding pattern indefinitely.

Amazon is over extending themselves, that is all there is to it.
Until Best Buy and other sources also start having the issue I would not worry about it or put too much stock into it.

The Blu-ray market is expanding pretty quickly (actually, it's growing faster than any other optical medium before it!) so it's almost impossible to accurately estimate demand.

I just saw a thing that said there was a 47% increase in sales over the course of two weeks near the end of May. Bursts like that (likely driven by hardware promotions like those we are seeing this week) can totally fubar any market forecasting retailers are doing on determining order quanities.

Remember, Amazon probably ordered their initial quantity over a month ago. Obviously, with a market as new and growth orientated as BD right now, those figures used then are probably pretty irrelevant.

We will never see production issues with BD. Current facilities can handle forecast demand for years from now already I'm sure. The demand simply can't grow fast enough to surpass line production increases without something MAJOR happening (like DVD being dropped by all studios tomorrow).

There's nothing to worry about.

Let's bring back Dave Vaughn and ask him what he has to say about this.

The blu-ray shortage is like the gas shortage. Some false crap pumped out for whatever corporate reason to hike prices during the summer months.

I've noticed some blu-rays that should be way lower in price seem a bit higher than they used to be PRE blu victory.

I got an e-mail from Amazon over the weekend notifying me that my order for the Fox 'war bundle' (Patton, Sand Pebbles, Longest Day) has been delayed and is now estimated for July 8-14. I initially thought of cancelling the order, but now I guess I'll wait since the price is so good.....

What makes you think Madden uses 50gb discs?

Maybe we should ask the insiders about production limits and yields. . .

So how do you explain the Xbox 360 version of the game which comes on a single DVD?

well mgs4 shipped numbers are 3 million so that's 3 million 50GB discs right there

surely other BDA members can't be happy if sony takes all 50GB discs for games?

Planet Earth is all on BD25 discs, so I'm not sure how that is relevant?

So far this year over 65% of releases have been on BD50 discs!
