Default 147,000 Blu-ray players sold in BF Week

Some numbers on standalone sales during BF week:

http://www.videobusiness.com/article...dustryid=47213

Quote:
DEC. 9 | North American stand-alone Blu-ray Disc player revenue during the week of Thanksgiving and Black Friday more than tripled from a year earlier after Sony and Samsung dropped prices of their entry-level machines below $200 to generate holiday demand, NPD Group unit DisplaySearch said today. Meanwhile, Black Friday TV revenue fell as retailers discounted prices on larger liquid-crystal display sets.

Consumers paid more than $30 million for 147,000 Blu-ray players during a week in which the average price was slightly more than $200, down from almost $400 a year earlier, DisplaySearch said. About one in four video-disc players purchased for the week ended Nov. 29 were Blu-ray machines, up from 6% a year earlier. Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 videogame console, which includes a Blu-ray player, weren't included in the DisplaySearch figures.

Thought this sounded pretty good as well...

Quote:
"Blu-ray had a pretty good Black Friday," Paul Erickson, director of DVD and HD market research at DisplaySearch, said in a conference call today. "This is primarily due to one factor: sub-$200 pricing."

With Blu-ray player sales on the rise for the week, sales of standard-definition DVD players, whose average price of about $40 was little changed from a year earlier, plunged 24% to $18.5 million. Such trends are likely to continue into next year, when Blu-ray player sales will surge 76% to 3.84 million units while DVD player sales will fall 24% to about 14 million units, DisplaySearch forecasts.

More revenue and profit made on Blu-ray hardware than on DVD hardware. Well, well, well...

I wonder what the haters will come up with next!

According to an article last year, ~21000 Blu-Ray players sold that week last year.

That means this is a 7x increase, not 3x. What am I missing?

Well, I guess 7x is "more than 3x".

Maybe a 3x revenue increase?

That would fit, 21k players at $450 is about $9.5m and they just reported $30m revenue...

That number seems low. I want a recount! Are they including PS3 sales?

Very nice. It looks like the format is definitely heading in the right direction and becoming mainstream. Haters are having to eat some crow now

They sold well because the players were cheap. The real test comes when consumers start buying BRPers, like BF, at the 300-400 price point. Most people won't go blue unless they get a really great deal. How does that help BR? I worked BF at best buy..When the ultra cheap Sony BRPers sold out, they wouldn't even pay a bit more..To go blu..We still had bulk stacks of BRPers. Sony, etc, REALLY needs to in form consumers how BR is much better then DVD.. This includes salesman..A lot of people who buy a BRPer, use the cables that come in the box.. Then return the HDTV or the BRPer cause it's 'broken.' And companies need to start putting component or HDMI cables with the player.. It's beyond stupid to put composite cables instead.

Are you REALLY making the argument that Blu-Ray can't be considered successful until people are willing to buy more expensive players? Seriously?

I do agree though, an blu-ray player, which is designed to play High Definition video should come with a HDMI. Might help people understand that dont have HD tv's to figure out why THEY need to go buy the other cables!! (or help those that that do have an HD TV and are hooking it up to sub-par performances because they don't understand there is a HDMI "available" for best quality). I know it says it in the manual, but everyone doesn't read the manual.

I agree. They really don't cost that much to produce. It's probably retailers that push for them not being there because cables are their profit source.

I would like to also know what PS3 sales and DVD player sales (in units) were for BF.
