Default Over 15,000,000 Blu-rays sold in 2009 Q4

Quote:
Over 15 Million Blu-ray Movies Sold in Q4 2009
Posted January 4, 2010 12:00 PM by Juan Calonge

According to estimations by the research department of Home Media Magazine, Blu-ray software sales in the fourth quarter of 2009 through December 20 was just 23,000 copies short of 15 million – a milestone certain to be passed when the sales for the week ended December 27 are added. The year's top-selling title was 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen', closely followed by 'Star Trek'.

Here is the top ten for 2009, again through December 20:
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Star Trek
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Up
The Dark Knight
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Quantum of Solace
Twilight
Watchmen
Unfortunately, and as usual, no actual sales figures per title were published. However, it is worth mentioning that the comedy 'The Hangover', with only one week on shelves, sold enough copies to enter the yearly charts in 15th place, with 31.55% as many units sold as 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'.

That is impressive, but not entirely surprising given some of the prices we've been seeing. Hopefully they'll stick with the trend!

That total does not include discs sold in the last 11 days of the year. You can add 2 million to that total.

If that is true, then I am guessing a bit more then 2M, it misses all the people buying BDs after they oppen their BD players that where under the tree, it will also miss any last minute buying.

I tried to make a separate post for this, but it was deleted for some reason. I think that we should stop buying new releases untill the prices drop back to $19.99 or less. It makes no sense that the prices for huge blockbuster movies were $19.99 and now up to $24.99. I also dislike the fact that new releases drop in price after the first week. Their should be an incentive for buying the movie on the release week, like DVD's. We should remind the studios of what most peoples price point is by extremeley low 1Q sales for 2010.

It just shows that when Blu-ray movies are priced correctly, they sell. I expect low numbers for January because of pricing and selection, but mostly pricing.

Yup...most of the Blu-ray's were cheaper than the DVD. Those numbers are impressive. I think it's safe to say that the format has officially taken off! It will take another 2-3 years for it to start defeating DVD though.

I am happy that Blu-ray has become a successful, high-quality replacement format to dvd. If Microsoft had their way, we would all be downloading 720P videos with 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtracks at this stage.

My only gripe with Blu-rays is that they're a bit expensive for me. But then again, I don't want to buy DVDs either.
But I guess the more mainstream Blu-ray becomes, the cheaper it'll get.
