Default Best Buy in Buckhead knows the format score

I went into the Best Buy in Buckhead (in Atlanta, GA) and they had two high def DVD set ups, one was a Sony BD player, and the other was a Samsung BD player. They didn't have any HD-DVD displays I could find. Just thought I'd spread the good news.

It seems like major retail chains are starting to make the decision for people. Like it was mentioned before, stores do not like their floor space being taken for battling formats. Retail stores would rather put something out there that would probably bring them a larger revenue stream. They know which format is clearly outselling the other. I have seen this "phasing out" happening in the Atlanta area (slowly but surely). There are some Circuit City stores that are not stocking HD DVD at all. In Fry's Electronics, there is a Samsung BD player playing Ant Bully on a HDTV. It is displayed right on top of the BD movie section. The Best Buy stores just seem to be phasing (or phased) out the HD DVD players. I still see the discs on display in every Best Buy I've been to.

Yea, they're still selling the HD-DVDs, but they're not showing it off like they used to do. Also, the only HD-DVD players they show online are the LG combo, 360 add-on, and the HD-A2. I know there's another one coming out soon, but like you said, it seems like they're choosing the BD side.

The Best Buy here in Lynchburg, VA still has a section for both sets of discs, and they are abou equal size, but they only have a display set up the Blu-Ray players right next to the 1080p Sony Bravias which are their featured and most expensixe TVs.

Seems like a solid lean toward BD.

Sears here in philly has a big display for their Sony BD player while the Toshiba is on sale for 399.99 and you have to put together a search party just to find the floor model...

you'd think they would show it off more if it was on sale...

Had to go to Best Buy in Omaha today to get some computer supplies and decided to check the displays after reading this thread. They had two different Blu-Ray displays set up and running. End cap types. I noticed a couple of HD-DVD players around the corner from one of them on a lower shelf, but not being actively promoted. Everything seemed to be Blu-Ray all the way.

I didn't get to the software section to see what was happening.

I'm on the north side of Atlanta and I haven't seen anything too slanted to BR around where I'm at. The Best Buy at North Point Mall has had a BR player up for a while and I don't think they've had an HD DVD player up at all but I could be wrong. The last time I was there they had relatively equal disc sections.

I'll be going up there this Friday as Sony's has a 2 day exhibition going on. I'll stop in the store and see what the sections look like.

Here's the info on Sony's exhibition for those who might be interested.

I went to one of my local Best Buys today and from what I can tell they have completely removed the HD-DVD display. They still have the usual 2 unsold players and HD-DVD disk section but absolutely no HD-DVD displays.

Most retail chains have basically the same set up at every store with only small variations. The planograms are sent out on a national and regional level, so it seems to me that the corporations are leaning toward BluRay. I work at Sears in the electronics department and we have a nice BluRay display that we received from Sony. Toshiba didn't send us anything until last week when they gave us 2 HDDVD brochures. Kinda lame...

Fry's in Sunnyvale shocked me a few weeks ago by setting up a huge display as you walked in. While the display mantioned both HD DVD and BD, the display was a Toshiba player showing HD DVD (Superman Returns iirc).

Today when I walked in the same screen was showing RV from the LG player and all mention of HD DVD was gone. So I was pleasantly shocked this time .

At the media section they still had one of each running though. If/when HD DVD disappears from there, the writing really is on the wall...!

I was at one of the local walmarts and they had small display with 6 shelfs about 2-2 1/2 feet in length. Top four shelves at eye level are filled with blu-ray. There was also display for blu-ray as well as pamplets for the format. The bottom two had HD. Only way I noticed them is I had to bend down to look at the last shelf of blu-ray. If all wal-mart displays are the same, HD will have a problem. How many wal-marts are there in the US? Over 2500!! And over 2500 more outside the US
