Default Old Receiver New TV question

I have a setup question regarding my stereo receiver with no hdmi ports.

Basically my setup is currently as follows:

Cable set top box and hd dvd player each connected to my HDTV with an HDMI cable. TV is connected to my stereo receiver with an optical cable.

I like that with this setup I can switch the audio and tv source at the same time through the tv, but the problem is I don't seem to be able to get dolby digital AC-3 sound to my stereo receiver.

I only have 2 speakers but I'd like to be able to get dolby digital sound. Is there another way to do this without connecting my set top box directly to my stereo receiver?

Use RCA cables? Or do I just need to buy a new stereo receiver?

I'm kind of hesitant about buying some 7.1 mega system because it looks like hell in my opinion and I just want high quality sound. doesnt have to come in 7 directions. Any thoughts?

If your TV has a simulated surround system, you could use that. Also, you can get a new reciever and patch everything threw it, If you don't want a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, then you could always go with a 2.0 (2 fronts, no Sub), 2.1 (fronts with a Sub), 3.0 (2 Fronts, 1 center) or a 3.1 (2 fronts, 1 center and a Sub).

Can't you run the optical from your HD DVD player to the reciever and get DD? I do not know how HD DVD players work since I have never had one, but it has to be similar.

Does the HD dvd player have analog out you could hook into the back of the reciever? it should have at least 2 channel read and whites??

just some thoughts
