Default Audio Problem - Can anyone help?

Hi I'm new to all this so forgive me if I am asking the obvious.

I have a Philips LCD TV with a DVI-I connector. I realise this cannot take audio (although not when I got it!), so when I had Sky HD I ran the audio through a cheap Home Theatre kit. Now I have Blu-ray (Sony BDP-S300) I wanted it all to work! So I also bought a Sony AV receiver (STR-KS1200) as I thought if the audio was all going thru the receiver the DVI wouldn't matter.

Unfortunately I can get great pictures, but no sound, or I can unplug the TV HDMI connection and the sound comes on (but no picture). I don't understand why hte TV connection should affect the AV receiver as I am not receiving any signal from the TV at all - it's just a monitor really.

Is there something I should be doing, or can do to get sound and pictures without having to connect the analogue connections (which are on the front of the TV!)?

Thanks for any help
