What would you do?
I have a BNIB 60gb model bought at bb.com last week. Picked it up just because. We have a ps2 so the bc is not a big issue. would you A) sell it for a profit and buy one of the newer 80 or 160gb models that runs quieter and cooler? B) Just keep it boxed up and sealed and then sell it further down the road when the supply of NIB models has really dried up and hope for a further price increase on the secondary market. or C) just use it and not worry about the louder fan noise and temp compared to the newer models |

depends how much you care about the noise factor. But I wouldn't hope to sit on it and sell it later because there is still a possibility that they will come out with another backwards compatible model or have a software update to make all of the backwards compatible.
also there will probably be a price cut in the near future so that would devalue it even more. |

is the 60g much louder?
besides blu-ray, my main factor in going from xbox to ps3 was the noise. the 360 sounds like a freakin jet fighter is fly thru my living room. i cant hear my ps3 (new 80g) unless all other equipment is off.. my cable box is louder than the ps3. |

Weird.. my 60gb has less fan noise than my dad's 80gb. The 40gb down at the lakehouse IS pretty quiet, but I'd keep it comparable with the 60gb... Once you have it on for all hours of the day though I do notice the 40gb seems to keep its cool better than the 60gb, but that's really not a big deal since we're talking about two really quiet units.
Dude said it best.. my cable box is louder than my PS3 |

My 60G is very loud, but thanks to bluetooth, I keep it in a fully enclosed wooden cabinet witha fan-hole out the back and an extra fan to keep air circulating in the cabinet.
I would consider upgrading to a quieter 80G, but I've heard that the 60 is the only one with an actual chip for backwards compatibility. It is very important for me to still be able to play some old Final Fantasy games that I have on PS1 and PS2. The PS3 60G is by far the loudest piece of equipment in the living room... If I left the door open on the cabinet, I wouldn't be able to hear the movie without cranking it.... |

Only noticeably so for Folding@Home and it used to be(?) for DVD upscaling as well .. but I haven't watched a DVD in some time .. and firmware updates were constantly improving the fan kicking in or not .. so not sure of the current DVD status anymore.

I will admit that the PS3 is the loudest piece of equipment I have, but that's like saying a whisper is louder than silence. It reminds me of a white noise generator in a doctor's waiting room. With the TV on, the PS3 whisper easily disappears into the background. To the OP, I'd say pull it out of the box and put it to use. No use sitting on a piece of equipment that really has little chance of increasing in value. |

It's specific to certain models, not across the line. I had a launch 60gb that was as quiet as can be. It crapped out on me and Sony replaced it (reluctantly) this summer with a new 60gb, which ALWAYS sounds like it's running Folding@Home, unless it's sitting on the XMB.
So, consider yourselves lucky. |

I agree that the cabinet does increase the heat problem, and the high-fan kicks on more often, but if I put it anywhere else, I would hear it all the time. Maybe I have an older version of the 60G before they figured out some noise and heat problems.

Yellow light of death. Whenever I heard about this problem I was pretty concerned. However, it seems that it's only really a big issue with 60gb ps3 consoles. Just something to keep in mind ![]() |
