I would consider upgrading to a quieter 80G, but I've heard that the 60 is the only one with an actual chip for backwards compatibility. It is very important for me to still be able to play some old Final Fantasy games that I have on PS1 and PS2.

The PS3 60G is by far the loudest piece of equipment in the living room... If I left the door open on the cabinet, I wouldn't be able to hear the movie without cranking it....
Maybe you shouldn't keep it in what amounts to a wooden box and recycle hot air around it...

I will admit that the PS3 is the loudest piece of equipment I have, but that's like saying a whisper is louder than silence. It reminds me of a white noise generator in a doctor's waiting room. With the TV on, the PS3 whisper easily disappears into the background.

To the OP, I'd say pull it out of the box and put it to use. No use sitting on a piece of equipment that really has little chance of increasing in value.
