Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but alas I am frustrated. I just bought an Insignia Blueray player from Best Buy, where they neglected to tell me I might need cables.
I have an older Panasonic TV, its a 1080 i. I hooked the player up well enough to be getting sound from my surround sound speakers, so I know that is fine, but I'm not getting picture. What I need to find out is what cables I need in order to finish the job and get a picture. I have heard that the HDMI cables are a scam, but probably necessary. I'm not even sure if my TV has the right output for the HDMI cable. Help Please!!! |

Check the back of your TV has Component in. They will look like regular RCA jacks but they will be Blue Green and Red. That's how you will hook up the video for the Blu-ray player.
HDMI is a digital signal used to carry both Audio and Video streams over one cable. It is the best way to output sound and video if your TV/Audio system is capable of accepting it. Let me knwo if you need help with anything else. |

I was using the same output set up (the blue green and red) for my DVD player. When I unhooked the DVD player I plugged in with the same colors as before to the Blue-ray player.
This might make a difference: the blue ray wasn't hooked up directly to our TV, it was connected through our sound system as before. There was also one whire that said THX on the side that was hooked up to our DVD player that didn't have an output in the blue-ray player. I appreciate all the help you have given me thus far. I finally believe there is hope! |

Sometimes its good to just unhook everything and start fresh. The Blu ray player most likely will not go through your surround so you'll need to run it directly to the tv from the player and only run the sound from the player or tv to the receiver. There are many ways to run some systems but you gotta have video so run that first and then decide how you want to connect the surround sound. If I can help with anything, let me know.

Everyone is kind of shooting in the dark without knowing model #'s- maybe providing some more information can help?
That said, just like everyone else, I'm guessing you don't have an HDMI connection on your set, so component would be needed to carry the video. Depending on your receiver, you'll most likely use optical to connect the player to the receiver. |

A couple of things.
1. You should have been able to swap the RED/BLUE/GREEN Component wires with your DVD player and had no problems. I did however, run into that issue with my Sharp BluRay player. You need to actually "Turn ON" the Component Output (which "Turns OFF" the HDMI output) 2. HDMI isn't a "scam", what you might have heard is the real expensive HDMI cables are a scam... in that they really don't give you any better performance than a cheap one. If you TV has an HDMI in, use it. Technically, BluRay players can prevent you from getting full HD from Component on a title-by-title basis. While they aren't doing it YET, this will keep you from worrying in the future. If your TV has a DVI input, you can get an HDMI-DVI cable, that will do the same thing as HDMI, but not carrying sound. (Doesn't matter to you because you are using separate wires to your surround anyway) |
