Talking Vaio > Sony > Panasonic using HDMI - won't work

hey guys,

Today I got lucky and scored a Sony Surround sound set for little (whole set is called Sony MUTEKI HTDDW1600 I think).

So here is what I am trying to do:

1) Vaio VGN-FZ180e (BluRay or just Mediaplayer music) HDMI Output to,
2) Sony STR-K1600 HDMI input (Video 2\BD1) which does sound and HDMI Out to,
3) Panasonic PTA-700E HDMI in.

This should give me surround sound via the Sony whilst watching movies via the Panasonic projector. WRONG....

There are a couple of problems I can't figure out (as I am pretty new to this stuff I might be overlooking something sutpid...).

1 - My Windows Vista Busniness says ControlPanel > HardwareSound > HDMI Sigmatel: "Not plugged in", whilst I have plugged this in the Sony. So does that mean its not talking with the Sony?
2 - Am I using the right connections, the Sony also has a DVD in???

I have connected the HDMI cable from Vaio to Projector and that works fine.

Sorry these questions may sound stupid but I am a beginner in HDMI land...

I dont even know where I can begin to look why its not working, so.... thanks for any suggestions where and how to solve this.

Ronald

EDIT - sorry, forgot to explain that I have neither sound nor video in any way (expect from head phone jack out to CD in via RCA lol)

When you connect the HDMI to the Projector directly, do you get sound through the projector's built in speaker?

Thanks for replying, if I plug in the HDMI cable direct to the projector I have no sound, now I am not sure because it does not have sound (its quite old) or that there is something else wrong.

Also if I look in Control Panel > Hardware > Audio devices I still get the dreaded "HDMI device not plugged in".....

Check your manual if your PJ has a built-in speaker. If you don't wanna check the manual, then check if any of the inputs have L+R connection. If it doesn't, chances are the PJ has no speakers.

Could just be that the Vaio cannot deliver audio via HDMI. Call Sony.

Thanks, forgive me if I am talking rubbish, but if the laptop would not be possible to pass on sound why does it show in the "hardware > sound > HDMI..." section?

ps, PJ does not have any volume controls and/or in or out plugs so I dont think it has sound.

According to cNet, your HTIB will not accept HDMI audio:

http://www.cnet.com.au/hometheatre/h...9280044,00.htm

1) Run HDMI directly to your PJ. Do you get picture?

2) Run optical or analog L/R to your Sony HTIB for sound. Do you now get sound?

If no to either, then there are probably some settings in your computer that are not correct. I can't help there, but you definitely should not be running HDMI to your HTIB unless you only intend to use it as a video switcher, because that is all it is capable of doing.

Yep, your right, its only a HDMI Switcher. However I still did not get the right results, even knowning that. So I called Sony and it looked like the reciever was faulty, so I went to the store and splashed out on a top of the line Sony one and now it all works, allmost.

DVD now works on HDMI, audio and video
Vaio now works on HDMI, video is fine, audio I still have to play with.

When I try to configure the Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio Device > HDMI option I see two checkboxes:

1) one is for "Front Left and Right", which works fine
2) the other for "Surround Speakers", which is greyed out (so does not work)

I run Vista Business and thought this should be ok?
Any idea from your side?

Many thanks for your help till now!

Ronald
