Default 1080p: high-res make movies look cheap & fake? (Actually frame rate TV interpolation)

I have a 1080i at home and went to some stores to check out the 1080p sets. I know its double the resolution. However, after watching the same Blu-rays I own at home at the store, it seems like every movie looks so real that it doesn't look like a movie anymore.

Everything looks like a cheap documentary or news report or theatrical play. I can't explain it. It seems the quality is too realistic to a fault. Batman Begins and ID4 both looked fake, especially the live action sequences. I thought I was watching a "making of" documentary during the Tumbler sequence through Gotham.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I'd prefer to stick with 1080i if my movies are going to look cheap with the double resolution.

its because of the tv settings in the store, not that its interlaced vs. progressive.. or probably because they have Motion Flow on, on the tv's...

That's what I was going to say.

It's the ehancements they have turned on, not the resolution.

I am willing to bet those TVs had 120hz refresh rate on and displaying movies.

What on earth are you talking about? The store you went to must truly have a messed up display for you to come away with those thoughts. Or it's got some bizarre motion enhancing crap on it.

Also, 1080p is not double the resolution of 1080i, it has to do with interlacing frames vs. progressively scanning them.

I thought ID4 looked fake on my 1080i tv.... I find that the better the PQ the more you can see how cheesey some of the effects are, but not that it looked too real....

It depends. Bluray made the first Matrix look almost modern for me.

I agree with the other posters, it sounds like they had some sort of frame rate interpolation motion "enhancing" feature turned on that makes movies look like consumer camcorder footage.

I HATE that stuff. If I wanted to watch a soap opera, I'd... I've never wanted to watch a soap opera, so I don't know how to finish that thought.

If it's the store settings, then there would be no problem at all. I checked Best Buy and Costco thus far and every single unit in both stores had this problem, so I assume THIS is how its suppose to look under progressive scan.

What I mean by "cheap" is that you can tell all the effects are fake to a higher degree than you normally can. The actor faces look like something you'd see in a Making Of Documentary, not the actual movie.

Whining is when you complain about cover art or the thickness of a case or the font style on the back. I think this is a legitimate concern.

Again, 120hz refresh rate has this effect. Go into the menu at the stores, turn of motion flow or whatever that tv has, and notice the difference.

i bought the 120hz sammy just to use it for sports...mostly, but its absolutly awesome to use on animated features such as Ratatouille, gives them a 3d effect but sports was the main selling point for me....

+1. Had teh same issue at times with the 120Hz on, which is why they recommend having it off for movies.

*EDIT: Motionflow/etc, not 120Hz
