I agree with the other posters, it sounds like they had some sort of frame rate interpolation motion "enhancing" feature turned on that makes movies look like consumer camcorder footage.

I HATE that stuff. If I wanted to watch a soap opera, I'd... I've never wanted to watch a soap opera, so I don't know how to finish that thought.

+1. Had teh same issue at times with the 120Hz on, which is why they recommend having it off for movies.

*EDIT: Motionflow/etc, not 120Hz

yes jsub... the 120 hertz is for the motion blur stuff... they are right. You should definately look into this feature and have it turned off when viewing blu-ray movies. You will see a major difference when this is turned off.

Aiite, thanks. I'll go back and see if this is indeed the problem. I don't know why stores would do this b/c it could turn away potential buyers (me).

Should you turn 120Hz on when watching live sports then?

stores gotta catch your attention with something right? as others posted what you saw was definitely store manipulation with the 120hz sets. if you notice stores like bestbuy, all their endcap displays are 120hz LCDs. if you watch there 1 plasma home theater setup you wont see this mess.

You were definitely looking at a tv with some sort of motion enhancer on. It makes everything look like a soap opera.

Normal TVs have a 60hz refresh rate. In simple terms, its twice the refresh rate which is intended to make motion seem more fluid and smooth. But, with movies which have a 24p, 24 frames per second, it makes it look unnatural. Maybe someone can explain this in a more technical way.

Without getting too technical, all you need to know is that it's the refresh rate of the TV that sometimes has this nauseating effect. A lot of people agree it's best to keep this stuff turned off.

its how many frames you are seeing per second.

some HDTVs, like the one i believe you saw, have something called 120hz motion plus on.

Now because a blu-ray has an encode for only 24 fps, when the store turns motion enhancment on the HDTV will litterly make up what 96 out of the 120 frames per second look like, while the blu has the information for the other 24.

that is why it looks fake and cheap, because 80% of the frames you see are made up.

of course you can turn this feature off for a more movie like (and better) experience.
