I've never downloaded anything of the PSN for my PS2 compatibility and I have no trouble saving. I thought that download was for any game that used the PS2 Hard Drive. Or am I thinking of something different? I have a 60gb launch if that makes a difference.

It's for games that used the hard drive on the PS2, basically Final Fantasy 11 (and a Nobunaga title I doubt left Japan). That's it.

Seriously, try reading the description on the PSN Store again.

Ah, doesn't matter, it won't hurt anything if you're not playing Final Fantasy 11.

And why is it recommended?

Alot of games used the hard drive if you had one, including NFL 2k5. It helped keep the gameplay smoother, added replays, etc.
