How good is uncompress compared to compress audio? Is it as noticable as standard video and HD video?

I think that they only remove certain high frequencies (above human hearing) in order to compress the data, so it shouldn't be that noticable.

Uhm, no....

I think you're getting TrueHD confused with lossy codecs. TrueHD I believe is slightly smaller in bitrate than other codecs because its supposedly only removing "unhearable" data.

Lossy audio is forced to remove data that can be heard. Less of a dynamic range, less of a "full" sound. Of course, this is just a layman's explanation.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to Dolby Digital Plus or DTS HD(not Master Audio), which are lossy codecs that are supposed to limit to only audible frequencies. Both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are lossless, compressed audio codecs meaning that there is no cutoff of frequencies.

They don't remove any frequencies - they remove what's not being used.

Where 24/96 5.1 PCM will roll along at 13.824 Mbps during periods of silence, dts-ma and TrueHD will drop down to well below 100 Kbps.

Instead of going "silence" 5 million times, they will go 5 million @ "silence" then in 5 million samples come and get the next piece of information.

That's a very untechnical information and TrueHD still requires a clock packet, but you get the idea.

As for Onkyo on eCost, they warranty their refurbs for 1-year which is most excellent. I have had good experiences with eCost.

There we go. Sorry I was a bit wrong as well. But bottom line is that there's more than a little difference between lossy and lossless, so don't fear taking the plunge on this receiver!
